currently i have been using lee liquid alox. It seems to work very well. but makes for some sticky and pretty messy looking bullets. I lube them the way it shows. i put them in an 2 litter bottle that i cut to make about 5 inches. Then pour in the lube and shake them up. then size them then re lube them again. it just seems that they really are sticky and look really messy. as far as a lube though it works really really good. with almost no leading of the barrel. Any how my question is what are you guys using. Same time do you lube the whole bullet like i do or just the rings. i never could figure out why do just the rings as the whole bullet gets hot and is subject to extreme heat.

For soft bullets at handgun velocities, I use either 50/50 Alox/beeswax or RCBS lube. For harder bullets that are going to be boxed in bulk, I use Blue Angel hot lube, since it's tougher and stays on the bullet better. I've also used Red Angel, and it works well, too. I've been experimenting with a 180 grain bullet in the .357 Marlin and Lil'Gun, using the Red Angel. The lube holds up really well and does what it's intended to do.

I've recently purchased some of the White Label Lube, but haven't used it yet.

Hope this helps.

I use bear grease mixed with a little racoon pudding to make it stick together good.

scrat,

I usually buy it at the SHOT Show and get enough to last a couple of years. You can also get it from Scharch, Inc. Here's the link: http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=2317382&showprevnext=1

You'll need a sizer/lubricator to use it, with a method to heat it. You can use a light bulb next to it, a hair dryer, or a heated base, which is what I use. I've got Star, Seaco, RCBS and Lyman sizer/lubricators. Each one is set up with a different lube, so whatever I'm making at the time, that machine is clamped to the bench and it's ready to go. All my machines are mounted on 1" plywood bases, 10" square, so they just clamp to the bench when I need them.

Hope this helps.

"The NRA Handloader's Guide" 1969 a compilation of "American Rifleman"
articles from 1950 to 1968.

One article in that book is "Pistol Champion Target loads".
All 9 featured champions use "Hensley & Gibbs" bullets, but the
lubrication
varies:

1) Gertrude E. Backstrom, locomotive side-rod grease

2) F. Bob Chow, perfect lube

3) G. P DeFino, Lyman Ideal

4) William E. Guiette, 7 parts way grease, 1 part Keystone open gear
grease

5) Gil Hebard, Ipco Colloidal Graphite

6) John W. Hurst, 2 parts beeswax, 1 part paraffin, 1 part cosmolene

7) Ellas Lea, 3 pounds petroleum jelly, 1 1/2 pounds beeswax, 12 oz
paraffin, 6 oz carnuba wax, 4 oz fine graphite

8) Harry Reeves, equal parts beeswax and water pump grease

9) W.T.Toney jr., 2 parts beeswax, 1 part beef tallow, 2 tablespoons
powdered graphite to 3 pounds mixture

I started casting bullets around 1968, and there were very few commercial lubes available then. I also made my own lube for a couple of years, with Ams-Lube Grease and beeswax. It was a pain to make and worked about as well as the commercial lubes. My favorite was Micro-Lube, but the company went out of business many years ago. When the NRA article was written in 1969, it was just about necessary to make your own lube, but that's not the case these days, as there are many excellent bullet lubes available.

Hope this helps.

I've been using 50/50 Beeswax and Alox. I only cast pistol calibers and it works great for me in my .357 and .44 mag heavy loads. Zero leading at close to 1500 fps.

If you have lubesizer SPG works great for black or smokeless
If not get the lee setup. which is fine for smokeless especially with the special muti groove bullets they make molds for.

Some article in Handloader magazine said Rooster is the best lube.
I don't know if that was bullet lube or sizing lube.
