I am a gamer, I play games -- they just happen to involve shooting. I like IDPA, IPSC and soon 3-gun. I am tired of hearing how such and such isn't tactical, how my gun is a gamer gun, how in real life ... et cetera, et cetera. So who's with me? Who likes to spend a day just playing the game, talking to the other shooters and just generally having fun. Come on you got to admit it beats 'a good walk spoiled.'

Im a gamer. I always look for the shortcut that no one else saw. I really cant think of a better way to improve gun handling that to put yourself under stress every week.

I am a gamer at everything I can game whether it is competition, defense, or work. The way I look at it is no matter what I am doing I want to do it as efficiently and aggresively as posible. The whole key is thinking of ways it hasn't been done before.

Sure pisses off some people that write rulebooks but they should have asked us to look at them first before publishing them. :D

I have a separate thread on getting into IDPA at the ground floor. However, I'm a gamer at the range. I'm also 57 and find shooting sharpens mental acuity. I have a feeling getting into the concentration, pressure, and quickness needed in pistol competition will stave off the inevitable dementia of inactive old-age.

I am a gamer. Not in the strictest sense of the word, but I consider myself a gamer. I compete when I can; work doesn't allow it to be a regular thing. I make every attempt to win. It isn't an equipment race to me. I shoot pretty much bone stock guns. But that is the game for me. How many people can I beat. Guys that are using race guns, guys that shoot every match. How many can I beat ?

444 -- I am with you. I treat the IPSC matches I go to like a game. But, I can't really keep up with the equipment race. I shoot a bone stock CZ-75B Military with fixed sights.

Last week at shot 34 "A"s and 2 "B"s in a 36 round course of fire. It was the most As of the group -- but I also had to note that everyone in front of me (and several behind me) had about 4 times as much gun as I did -- makes you feel pretty good.

The equipment race ended in 1990-1991.

I am sorry you feel this way, but, do you realize we are shooting in Open the equivalent guns and gear that won the 1990 world shoot in Austraila? Doug Koenig used a 9X21 Hi-cap compgun with a Tasco Scope, Safariland holster etc. Not much has changed in 13 years other than the comp guns have actually gotten cheaper for the most part. It was $3-4K for a custom Nastoff .45 then! Now you can get an incredible gun from a factory for $1,500. I remember when I was talking to WCPI, George told me that of the 26 guns to build on the rack the limited guns were averaging $200 more than the comp guns!

Here is one that will throw people for a loop. It is actually cheaper to shoot Open than limited in the long run. (Can't wait for someone to bite on that one!)

Well Gabe let me tell you. ;)

Once the difference is figured out between an open gun and a limited gun (assuming the have the same features except comp and scope) you generally are out around $400-$700 more for the initial open gun purchase.

All the other gear required is the same.

Guess what? If you shoot jacketed bullets your price difference between the .38 super bullets and .40 s&w averages $30 a thousand. Your break even point is about 20K rounds at a $600 difference. Then your saving money shooting Open.

BTW did you know that you can shoot a $1300 custom glock in production and a $1200 custom glock in IDPA stock? That cracks me up! hehehe

The equipment race isn't in OPEN anymore it is in all the other classes. The people in those classes want to gain every advantage possible within the rule set.

MattBurkett I can't agree with you more glad to see some one people might listen too talk about the "equipment race". I saw another post where you talked about it.
I love someone pointing out my "race gun" SV I paid $1600 with 4 mags for, that's telling about the Wilson, Ed Brown, etc they are going to pay as much or more for.
The equipment race ended in 1990-1991 I bought my SV in 1996 I think and its still what most of the big dogs use, hell some have gone back to bushing-short frames etc. I have had the same total gear the whole time and have no more $$$ in it then some one with a Wilson.

Matt, just curious- what sorts of things can be done to a Glock that bring the price to that level, and still have it legal in IDPA ? I suspect once I see the answer I won't be surprised, but please enlighten me !


BTW, good on you for fact that you come here to answer questions. I am in a similar position as you in another sport, but find I tend to avoid boards about my sport because of the arguments and squabbling that "pro's" sometimes get. I hope people here realize what an asset you are.

I didn't see your Surefire incident- but I must admit the very first time I shot a Glock (14 or 15 years ago (!)) I might possibly have had the knuckle of my left thumb right behind the slide...

I am rapidly becoming a gamer...I'm going to a match this weekend in the Nashville area. Been trying to encourage a couple of acquaintances on this board to go, too.

I've been to 3 or 4 USPSA matches with my stock G17 in production class. (fortunately, the "regulars" are pretty tolerant with "newbies") I am into this enough that I just bought a G 34 practical/tactical for this sport.

I have been ok on accuracy, but my speed needs improvement. I consistently shoot middle of the pack.

The way I look at it, it's trigger time. Any practice I can get improves my accuracy, and with the competitive element, it puts some pressure on me to perform under some stress. IMHO, this puts me somewhat ahead with a SHTF situation. It's not like formal SHTF training, but it does keep me from going into a situation totally cold.

GamGod86, stick with it a little and have fun soon your be beating a lot of those NTPS "gamers". After a few matches you'll be gaming with the best of them. The G34 is the way to go for the Glocks. NTPS used to be the prime club for "gaming" they should have held classes.:D

No, no bad sarcasm. I shot a few matchs at NTPS and found when I started going to state matchs, I had learned a lot from the club stages and the people at the club. It was like being over prepaired for a test, I thought the state matchs would be harder. They were challenging just didn't realize how challenging some of the club matchs were. Good practice.
Maybe I will see you there. I might shoot Sunday........guess I will have to dig out my IPSC stuff:what:

You may want to check out some of the other matches around the area as well. They hold IDPA matches in Maury County, Manchester, Millersville and Gallatin. Manchester is supposed to start IPSC as soon as USPSA gets off its duff and sends them all the stuff. Drop me or Tac a line if you want more information.
