I was advised that Winchester makes 12 gauge slugs that have a similar design as the ranger handgun ammo. I was also advised that they expand:what:

Does anyone know if this is true?

Lots of slugs expand on deer sized game. Forster style slugs typically end up shaped like mushroom caps and about silver dollar size.Very efficient energy transfer.

The newer high velocity sabots also expand, not always true with the older spindle jobs.

I haven't recovered any of the KO Brenekkes yet, though at least one didn't exit. The Winchester HP Forster style give dramatic kills and short, easiyl followed blood trails. Expanded size is about an inch.

Remember, a bore diameter slug starts off wider than most rifle bullets expand to. I'd happily settle for zero expansion, if the slug's inserted correctly.

Rottweil Brenekkes do not expand much near as I can tell. The tend to exit on all but lengthwise shots, and the exit wound matches the entry. Very good blood trails,Ray Charles could track those deer.

The first two slugs I've ever recovered were from my January hog. One Remington, one Winchester, both Foster style slugs. One's about .90 (Winchester through the ribs) and the other is about 1.25 at the widest (through the spine).

That's enough for me! :)

When I was about 17, I shot a 4-point whitetail buck at 35 yards with a 1 ounce Remington Slugger out of a Remington Sportsman 48 12 gauge. The slug went through both shoulders of the buck, and embedded itself in a tree about five yards behind the buck. Looked like a lead washer the size of a silver dollar. The deer went about three feet. Straight down.
