Getting into guns in Johnson Co. KS

Hi,

My wife and I will soon be buying a couple of guns, primarily at this stage for home defense (I'm a green card holder so no CCW for me until I become a citizen). We've both shot a little bit before, so we know the basics, but were wondering about where to put in practice time.

Is there anyone on this board familiar with the Kansas City area who knows where the best places to get into the gun culture round here are, and where the best ranges are?

Thanks!

Found this online, so I can't vouch for it... (Just FYI)

http://will.mylanders.com/shot/kc_shops.php3

Until I get ambitious, this is just a text file and in order of distance from downtown Overland Park. Not many Missouri shops; I'm in Kansas and hate the cross-border rules for pistol transfers. Suggestions of where to visit, or pointers to websites for these or other shops in the KC area are always welcome.

S&S Guns
6909 W 82nd St
Overland Park, KS 66204
(913) 341-1025

Home based FFL; primarily custom orders. Only charges $15.00 for out of state transfers. Very friendly.

The Bullet Hole
6201 Robinson St
Shawnee Mission, KS
(913) 432-0050

Shooting range and dealer; fair prices, very busy. Not much inclined to perform special orders, $30 transfer fee. Best selection of military- style or "social" firearms, including AR-15's, SKS's, Mossberg 590's and similar. Small annual range fee required to shoot on the indoor range. Supposedly the largest indoor range in the nation; definitely big. There's two levels of range. IPSC and IDPA events are held weekly downstairs.

The Second Amendment
7111 W 79th St
Shawnee Mission, KS 66204
(913) 642-6303

Interesting selection of new and old guns; rather high priced; friendly and helpful. Always has time to discuss reloading, shooting or a new gun.

Olathe Trading Post & Pawn
2111 E Crossroads Ln # 103
Olathe, KS
(913) 780-3311

Small selection of old, classic or antique guns. Last time I was in there, they had 3 (!) Colt 1903's on the shelf. Haven't had much time to feel them out, see what they are really like. Nice selection of car and home audio toys, tho.

Simmons Gun Repair
700 S Rogers Rd
Olathe, KS
(913) 782-3131

Well, now -- this is simply the best equiped machine shop I have seen since I quit working at Boeing. They can build, fix or rebuild anything you want. Been around since 1946, and recently started selling guns as well as fixing them.

Nice selection of archery equipiment as well, and a "virtual indoor archery range".

Gun Shop Inc
716 S Rogers Rd # A
Olathe, KS
(913) 782-6900

Just across the parking lot from Simmons. Wide selection of pistols, rifles and *huge* shotgun selection. Some C&R, antiques. Helpful staff, reasonable prices. Only open 8 to 5 M-S, tho.

Denny's Guns
2001 Clay St
Kansas City, MO
(816) 221-9117

*The* AR-15 source for the 4-state area. Parts, kits, complete firearms, advice, upgrade and gunsmithing. Also great source of reloading kit, other firearms. Every gun shop I've been to in town has referred me up there for some part or another.

The Bullet Stop
2625 W Pawnee St
Wichita, KS
(316) 945-3331

Wichita's finest indoor shooting range. Very active IDPA and IPSC teams, also .22 league, big bore league and more. Nice selection of pistols, rifles and accessories. Exceptionally friendly and welcoming to all shooters. Only NRA Certified instructors in Kansas. Clean, well lit, awesome place. Affilliated with The Bullet Hole in KC -- memberships are transferrable and honored at both ranges.

Money Town Inc
2425 S Oliver St
Wichita, KS
(316) 683-3002

The *best* and *cheapest* firearms in the state. C&R's, military, hunting, personal defense, oddballs, special orders and more. Supermarket clean and well lit; very helpful and friendly. I've bought 90% of my guns here.

Hey nice to meet people in Kansas. I live in Santa Clara, CA and just completed purchase of a no longer in use, Atlas F missle silo in Kansas. I'm looking forward to meeting others there and inviting them to see my new home!

I'm in Jo Co as well.

The Bullet Hole is a decent range, but it's kind of expensive (no other nearby indoor options though). Missouri has a few state ranges in the area--Parma Woods in Parkville, MO and Lake City out by Blue Springs. Pigeon Hill up by St. Joseph is an unsupervised state range (never been up there though).

Cabela's has a good selection of guns; prices are, of course, a little on the high side. I've also found prices at The Bullet Hole to be pretty high; that said, I moved from Utah last summer, so my perspective might be skewed.

Can I ask where you're from? (just curious)

Sounds like quite a project. Should make a good tornado shelter!

wow! I always wanted to see one of these silos!
I'm in Valley Center, that's just north of Wichita. I'll send you a PM.

Lived in Olathe (well, just south of it, really... Ridgeview and 170th back when it was a horse farm) for eight years of my life.

Unfortunately, I didn't get into guns until six years later. :o

Pigeon Hill is nice, if you keep in mind that you get what you paid for... Also, it's a bit far away from anyone in Kansas City. However, as far as I know, it's the closest, free rifle range.

Another JoCo resident. I'm afraid the list above is a little out of date...some of those folks are out of business, but it's a decent starting place.

I shoot at Parma Woods when possible, can't beat the price ($3/hr). The Bullet Hole is nearer and their hours are better, but their costs add up.

http://www.mdc.mo.gov/areas/ranges/parma/

(directions - from JoCo take 435 w/North towards airport, exit at hiway 45 right after you cross the Missouri river. Left for about 2 miles, turn left towards Waldron. Follow that road until you can see the Parma sign - you'll be almost under 435 again. Long way around, Parma is atop the hill right at 435 and the Missouri)

Here's info on The Bullet Hole. If Parma Woods won't work with your schedule, you can't beat these guys.

While I've bought a gun or 2 at the Bullet Hole, I buy most of my guns at the Olathe Gun Shop - I've known the owner a long time & he's a good guy.

http://www.olathegunshop.com/

(directions. I take I-35 s to 2nd Olathe Exit (old 56 hiway), turn right at first traffic light. Take first right @ stop sign. Take next right at traffic circle, then go thru circle and left at the 2nd traffic circle, 2 blocks on right. )

Another Olathe gun shop I recommend is the Harrison Street Pawn shop. Just off 56 hiway on Harrison street. Nice folks, reasonable selection considering, and the owner does transfers at a very low price, if you find a gun online you want to buy.

Denny's in N. KC is THE place for AR's.

Denny's is a sponser at the following site. Join up and watch for 'group shoots' with the KS fellows, they're shooting S. of KC half an hour or so. I don't belong but it looks like it might be fun.

This Lenexa fellow is an expert in antique guns, runs an auction every few months where some surprisingly good pieces show up. Nice man, REALLY knows his stuff. Doesn't really offer a 'brick and mortar' gun shop, per se.

He's a member of the local Missouri Valley Assoc. collectors, IIRC. Watch for these folks to run their big guns shows. Worth the price of admission just to see their gun collections on display (and note - some prime firearms for sale)

I'm in a similar situation and investigated Pioneer Gun Club (http://www.pioneergunclub.org/). The public (including non-citizens) are welcome to shoot at open to the public and practice matches etc, but only USA citizens can join and you can only shoot at the range as a guest of a member.

Hope this isn't a repeat but you should check out missouricarry.com b/c much more than CCW is discussed there. Check out showmeshooters.com for a gun shop and range in Claycomo, MO (near Worlds of Fun). There's also wmsa.net and they might accept KS applications for membership.
