local gunshop had a gun marked "worst gun of the month", a 1940s made Stevens savage 12GA singleshot break top.
marked $70, next week, marked $60, then $50, then $40........after 4 weeks i told them, how about $25??
Sold....
took it home, tore it all apart, de-rusted it, hacksawed off end of barrel to 18" , then hacksawed off as much as i could of stock....oiled and greased it...varnished the stock.... ....wow, its short! (but legal)
i love my $25 "turd" gun....... great looking junker gun :D
i have almost 100 guns, ALL OF WHICH are expensive upper class guns, nice Ar15s, nice Yugo AK47s, lots and lots of glocks, police 870s, Benelllis....
but nothing seems as satisfying as restoring this $25 turd :scrutiny: :D
Ok, PIC ADDED>>>
shown in bottom of pic is the part of the barrel, and part of the stock i hacksawed off her.

Few months ago I asked the guy working at my local gun shop if they ever get old beat up crap pieces that they sell. He said they get em, but he buys them himself and restores them, strips them for parts, or makes project guns out of them :(
Side opening I am guessing.
*sigh*
Neat guns, lots of folks still use these in original configuration.
Side opening is nice...
7/8 oz load from 12 a bore is a real nice loading.
Most likely this gun was a fixed full choke.
Now it has no choke.
I prefer 20 bore and under for single shot shotguns, and I want choke.
I have a Youth 20 ga single shot with fixed modified choke that throw some of the best pellet patterns and slugs groups.
Factory recoil pad and it is real handy.
I mean real darn handy, hence the reason a number folks bought the same shotgun because it is handy, and shoots the patterns and groups it does.
Enjoy.
Just me, I would have kept in stock, and preserved some history.

Many such "turds" resided by the door of many a farm house in days past some still bounce around in tractors and can be seen in cabins or barns.
One good thing about a single shot is one tends to concentrate more when hunting as one shot is all you get.
Singles make great meat in pot tools especially beat up ones with no finish to worry about and minimal cash outlay, Great buy & congrats on a very dependable tool.;)

Definately asking for pics.
Nice idea to cut it down. Didn't someone else do that with an over-and-under double barrel? That was a nice one.

I learned about shotguns with an old 20 ga one of those that my dad recieved for his 12th birthday. That gun has taken many a jackrabbit.
Right now I have several of them that I've picked up for between 50 and 100 bucks. Good shooters every one.
My rule of thumb on guns? If it's serviceable and under 100 dollars, it comes home. The wife and I have an ageement: If we have cash and the purchase is under 100 dollars, said purchase requires no clearance with the spouse.:D

ha! a good friend of mine has a single shot break action 12 gauge that he recieved for free! The fella was moving so he gave up that old shotgun and a very simple compound bow to my friend. It was like a garage sale but no $$$.
I went and looked, but I didn't want to take advantage of a fella I didn't know as well as my friend did.

I had an old HR topper I did up like that, but I added an adjustable choke. I got it for $25 too! I wish I could find another one as it got stolen...
Actually, I would take as many of those at $25 as I could get my hands on. IT was one of my favorite guns out of my collection.
Went with me everywhere.
I would break it down and stick it in my suitcase while traveling.

since you don't care about the heirloom value of the gun, why don't you Duracoat/Ceramacoat/Cold Blue it?

4 cans of Krylon camo and time to waste. What was a 1200 Skeet with a 26" bbl, is now my 20" beater turd...
