Well, last night I finally decided to give it the old college try. I have a Defender with the plastic/polymer furniture.
Step 1) Take the buttpad and buttstock off.
Step 2) Decide how much you want to take off. I determined that 1" would do for me. It appears that I could have gone to 1 1/2" but not really any more or there would be no material to fasten the pad to.
Step 3) I used calipers set at 1" and lightly scored a line to mark my cut all the way around the stock.
Step 4) Using a hacksaw, carefully cut along your line. the material is soft and it took me about 5 minutes to cut the piece off.
Step 5) Using 180 grit sandpaper, clean up the stock. Deburring it sort of.
Step 6) Remove the hard plastic nib that lines up the recoil pad to the stock. Attach the rubber recoil pad and trim the excess rubber using a SHARP blade. Sand the remainder with the same 180 grit sandpaper to fit.
Step 7) Remove the recoil pad and put the buttstock back on the receiver, attach recoil pad again.
The pad doesn't look like it did when new but it functions the way I want it to. I'll try and take some pics tonight of the finished product although you won't be able to see any real difference.
