Did someone make it mandatory lately to create a post when first registering or something? Not that I mind new people saying hi, it just seems more and more lately and it wasn't that way a while back.

No, I think it's just snowballed...
One new person did it, another decided hey, that's a pretty good idea, and so forth.
I sort of like it.

Hi, I'm TallPine and I joined TFL in 08-02, and moved over here the first of the year with most everyone else ...
:D
There, now that's out of the way.

Introductions aren't mandatory but aren't proscribed either. Hi TallPine. ;)

I like it when folks introduce themselves -- more than once I've been involved in an intense thread and only after I've answered three or four posts noticed that the person I was talking to was new around here. It's kind of embarrassing when that happens, because I always feel as though I should have acknowledged their newbie status and made friendly noises before getting into a really heavy discussion with them.
So, hi new folks! Glad you're here. :)

Hi, I'm new. I know mercedesrules and Ian from elsewhere, though.

There has been quite an increase in the introductory postings, and I like the chance to welcome new members.
