Wanna Strider?

Thinking about buying a Strider but not sure if I would like the size of it, so starting a "passaround" for one on Blade Forums.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=261218
It's a fun way to fondle an expensive knife to see if you want it. 10 people kick in the required money to buy it, play with it for a week, then send it on to the next. At the end there is a lottery for the knife so you might win it! Couple of spots left for any interested.

What? Something is too tactical for Skunk? :what:
I.. I dont.. think I can sleep tonight...:neener:
BTW, why is the camoflauge on the clip side of the strider? Wouldnt that be the side that's least likely to be seen?

I just bought the Strider Tac GB #58 out of 60. Don't pass it around. Buy one. You will want to hunt bears with it. For more info check out the Usualsuspect.net

WS,
Can't "paint" G-10 so ya paint the other side. Why? 'Cause at least half of it is cammy? 'Cause it protects the Ti? 'Cause it's cheaper to use G-10 on one side than more Ti like the Sebenza and ya gotta make up for that somehow? 'Cause you can? 'Cause people think it's cool enough to pay for?

C'mon, Win, you gotta think tactical.
When you clip it onto a strap or your pocket, the clip side faces out. Thus it must match or at least blend with your camo pattern, lest the Tangos catch a telltale glint of black or silver and wipe out your entire team. . . . . ;)

Well, color me the black serpent, but I don't like this knife. Nothing about this knife calls me to spend what I can guess it costs. If some like it, hey, great knife for you. But for me, it does nothing.

I don't particularly like framelock knives...
You can't do any heavy duty cutting with them without worrying about it closeing on your fingers...
It looks pretty, but it dosen't look like a knife that I could see takeing out to the woods with me..

To tell the truth I did not see what all the hype was about either, that's why I started up this "passaround" on bladeforums. Wanted to give myself a chance to check it out for a fraction of the cost ($415. FYI) of buying one, with a chance of winning it at the end!
The only comparison I have for it was a Buck Strider, which is not a comparison at all. This knife is big with a rock solid lock up, but is light and feels surprisingly good in the hand. Especially in the reverse grip. With the "Brownie POP" it slams open with an incredibly loud crack and takes about all my strength to take the lock off to close. I thought I had mastered getting knives scarrey sharp but this knife takes sharpness to a new level, and it has stayed sharp through the trials I have been putting it through.
Is it worth the money? For my uses none of my knives are worth what I pay for them, but if I do not win this one I will buy another.

Never understood this argument, especially with this knife. I have cut three, 4 inch branches in half with it with no problem. I have stabbed 4 inch thick cardboard boxes with it over 100 times in fast succession, whittled wood, cut paper, chicken, steak, fruits, and vegetables with it and it still takes about all my strength to close it when I want to. I have no fear of the lock slipping or giving. Of coarse the blade shape helps allot also.

$415?!? Wow.....that's pricey. Of course, one cannot put a price on a fine weapon. If it fits one's hand properly, then it is worth any price. I'm not undertsanding the concern about the lock on the Strider here. For me, a folder does not get used for chores. So, my criteria is somewhat different. It stays sharp because it's not cutting anything. So, for me, knives such as Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch and Spyderhawk, Benchmade AFCK, Benchmade TSEK, Cold Steel Vaquero series, Kershaw assisted openers, CRKT M16 Big Dog, MOD LadyHawk, and so forth all are more than adequate for my purposes. I will not be using these folders for cutting branches or wood. If I'm in the woods, I have a Cold Steel Trailmaster. I will say I fail to understand the need for a folder to become a fixed-blade knife. To me, the intention of doing so is misguided. The advantage of the folder is concealment and legality in many areas. It's what you'll have, even in places posted against carry of firearms inside if you CCW. Some restaurants serve alcohol and thusly in many states, you cannot carry a firearm inside. Plus, many workplaces forbid firearms but will allow folding knives or just don't care about people carrying them as long as there is no overt action with them. Asking folders to become fixed-blade knives is like asking handguns to become rifles. It can be done, but why? The folder concern is the failure of a lock striking bone in a defensive application. Beyond that, I fail to see the need for a folder to become a friggin' aircraft carrier. A folder should be tight of lock and reliable, sharp, and fit the hand well. There are LOTS of folders that do all that. Some do better than others. If a folder has to become a fixed-blade, then do yourself a favor and GET a fixed-blade. In the woods, it's a MUST to have a fixed-blade as far as I'm concerned. If you live in an area that forbids gun carry but is legal to carry a fixed-blade open carry, then carry the fixed-blade and let peoples' opinions be damned. In many cases, a POS just SEEING a knife will make him leave you alone. Getting cut badly or stabbed is a very primal fear of humans. In many cases, as long as the folder saves you once, it pays for itself. It only needs to be able to open up a artery, stab deeply, or intimidate enough to cause an attacker to either leave you alone, become incapacitated, or die. It doesn't need to be able to repeat this again and again and again before proper maintenance. If you stabbed an attacker, the police will impound the weapon for awhile. This is where less expensive folders come into their own: you can have an identical one at home to replace it with and still retain the "feel" of the style of weapon you favor. Once you got the knife back, you would want to clean the blood off, sterilize the knife, inspect it for wear, and sharpen it. Nowehere does chopping firewood enter into that equation. If you have to chop your way through plywood to disembowel your attacker, then carry a chainsaw. Again, where a folder needs "toughness" is for the lock not to fail in striking a bone or for the blade to immediately dull when cutting flesh. If you need a knife to cut cardboard every day, have your employer buy you a box cutter. (And let's not forget those simple weapons were enough to successfully commandeer three jetliners and kill the flight deck crew and several passengers before turning the planes into de facto cruise missiles.) Well, this is my very biased opinion. I would wager the lock on the Strider would be more than sufficient or people wouldn't be going nuts to buy a $415 knife. Crappy knives might sell a $415 knife once or twice, but not for years. If the Strider is a weapon that fits folks, it's worth the simoleons. Myself, I just don't like it. I can see the handle would not fit my hand. So, I'd take the $415 and buy a Benchmade AFCK, a Kershaw Boa and another Spyderco Civilian and then take the rest of the cash and take the wife to eat someplace that has chilled salad forks and escargot. But that's just me.

Just wanted to put this thread to bed by telling yall that at the end of the Passaround we had the drawing, and I won it! So I guess I am not stupid enough to pay over four hundred bucks for it either! :neener:

Bruz,
Congratualtions on the drawing and acquisition of the strider.
I have the 3rd model in black, same blade design I have been carrying since purchased over at the Usual Suspect. I wanted the SnG to take to the Riddle of Steel earleir this month.
It rides well in the pocket, hardly noticeable in weight.
One thing to watch for that came to light for me since carrying it:
If your pants pockets are real tight, the studs will catch upon retrieval and partially open the knife when pulled from the pocket.
Yes, my SnG, from new will "pop" very nicely from the pockets. Closing was difficult and required two hands to put it back but after 500-700 openings, it has settled in nicely to become one of my favorite folders for EDC.
I like the knife, it is solid in lockup, lightweight and easy to carry, opens rather quickly from the pockets, and is made from good materials.'
I have two MARSOC Striders on order from two sources which will be available this next spring. One will be put away, the other used. They are serial numbered and a limited run [ with numbers ].
Enjoy that puppy.

I am glad some of you like the Strider Folder, but personally I'd rather have three Benchmade AFCKs in D2 for that price.

Josh has kept all emails in the order they were received.
He has not responded to anyone directly but when they get ready to ship, he'll start withthe first emails first and work his way down the line.
If you emailed him, he has not forgotten anyone.
They are due to ship early early next year sometime.
I try and double up on many things like this. One for use and one for ever.

Thanks Brownie, I am enjoying the Strider very much...so I have a few hundred more openings to get it where I can take the lock off with one hand after doing the POP eh! I got a MARSOC Strider on order also, liked the idea of helping a service person be able to get one.
I'd rather have three Benchmade AFCKs in D2 for that price.
Reckon that is one way to do it...I prefer having the one Strider, one AFCK's, one Sebenza, one Hells Belle, etc. Do not feel I need to leave out a knife I want to get three of the same knives I want.

Boats,
I'll put that on the list to test, should be about 6 months though as I have others in the que waiting to get abused -- ahh--used first.
Good idea. A good friend has one and I like it alot.
You are welcome on the "pop", glad you asked so I could share it with one of your caliber. Us combat mil types have a lot in common, no matter the branch of service.
Bruz,
Mine smoothed out after about 500 "pops" so I can close it one handed. Most time I've had to break in a knife but it is smooootttthhhhh now. Opened very nicley on the first try, but that lock was a bugger to get broken in.
Check the threads, I may be heading your way in the early spring.
Stay safe out there.

What is "the brownine pop"?
Also, how do you get access to the Usualsuspect.net? I registered, received a confirmation email, confirmed... I can log in, but it says I'm not authorized to "view". I sent an email asking about it, but never had any response. What IS the site, anyway? A knife sight?

Steve, I'll let the inventor Brownie answer the first question for you! The Usual suspect is a knife community, kinda a branch off from the Knife forum, also kinda the unofficial Striders forum. They do not appear to be very concerned about their membership numbers, try registering again if interested. http://www.usualsuspect.net/forums/index.php
Jon, the odds were great, 1 in 10. This is the third knife I have won...currently doing a Sebenza Passaround, one spot left, same odds of winning it at the end. Lots of fun even if you do not win!
