Howdy
Just wanted to ask what the best(ie; highest speed/KE level) .40S&W round is out there now. It's been about 10yrs since I used a .40 and want to buy some new factory fresh .40S&W rounds. I like the Remington Golden Saber 165gr JHPs but would prefer the new bonded type if Remington sells them. Speer Gold Dots in 165gr are good too, ;) . The 135gr Corbon JHP or 140gr DPX loads look useful. I've decided to use Federal EFMJ rounds in the spare mags. I know of other smaller companies that make powerful .40 loads but I want something well made and long lasting too.

Just about any 165gr JHP from a well established brand should do the job for you.

I have Winchester Ranger 155 grain in mine. I like the 155-165 grain options for compact .40s

PHX PD uses the 180grn Gold dot. Not the highest speed or energy, but it gets the job done well. Good penetration too.

I am happy with the Rem 180 jhp in the green box.
It turns a ground hog inside out wonderfully, imagine it would stop a BG.

Many of the loads I've seen (my brother-in-law gave me about 800 rounds of various "tactical" JHP he found when he moved into a house he bought from a cop) are severely downloaded. As in, 155 grain bullets at around 950 fps. I mean, wal-mart plinking ammo is loaded hotter.

I decided to use the Double Tap Ammo 135gr JHP or the Glaser Silver safety slugs with Federal EFMJ rounds in spare mags/back up.

In colder weather/winter I will use the Remington Golden Saber bonded 165gr JHP load.

The specs for the 135gr JHP are great! :D I like the idea of a high KE level for my Beretta 96D. I just hope DoubleTap's QC is up to snuff. The prices look good, too. ;)

I've never had a misfire or a jam with DoubleTap ammo, either in my Glock 19 9mm, Browning Hi-Power .40, or my wife's Glock 27 which jammed with all other ammo. Never an unfired primer, and they're exceptionally accurate. Little to no flash, especially compared to Remington UMC ammo.

I like the 155gr XTP HP hornaday and the 155gr HP magtech gardian gold,

of the two the magtech's are loaded a bit hotter, I chrono'd 20rnds of each and the magtechs avg approx 100fps faster out of my XD service,

but the XTPs hold together better.


several years back there was some european (can't remember the brand, but I think it was chech or serb made)170gr TC FMJ on the market that was advertised at around 1200fps,

I never bought any so I don't know if it'd do as claimed or not.

I am also a fan of the Winchester Rangers in 155gr. Good round and it rides in my G22 and my G23.All of the 155gr Rangers I've ever found have been training rounds - decent ammo in and of itself but just 'regular' hollowpoints.

The real-deal "Talons" are the Ranger LE, 165 gr JHP T-Series.

Back when I was into .40 caliber weaponary, I carried the 165 grain +P
Cor-Bon's as a duty load. It worked well for me, but I went back to my
favorite the .45 ACP, using the 200 grain Hornady T.A.P. JHP's~! ;):D

The current nuttiness in ammo pricing found .40 Federal 155 HSTs priced at the same level as my usual .45ACP practice ammo so I got a case.

A thousand rounds of HST means one gets to practice with one's carry ammo. That doesn't make it the "best" but I like it.

I liked the Federal 180gr Hydra Shoks - can't really tell you why, as I never shot anyone or anything but targets with them. I just seemed to be more accurate with that round. Also used Remington 165gr Golden Sabres as well - again, no real world experience, just printed better with them than most anything else....
