This morning i went to the ammo store and got some ammo for my Sar-1 and it was like 50 bucks for 500 rounds but after a nice day of shooting the ammo is gone :) ..I cant afford to spend 50 bucks every weekend to shoot..But as we all know .22 ammo is very cheap..I have shot them before but not very much are they fun for just shooting cans ect..
Or is there another caliber that is cheap in ammo that i don't know about..
If anyone could suggest anything under 200 dollars..i think i would get a cheap scope too..thanks for your time and suggestions

22's are cheap to shoot. can be entertaining to put up a target w/ a little honey or something and shoot flies...or yellow target board and pick off grasshoppers... however, 22's bore me to tears, regardless of the game.
i'd keep my eye open for something like a 222, 223, or something along those lines. worlds more fun than a 22, yet pretty cheap to shoot. of course, this assumes you are wanting to also shoot precision...

Ruger 10/22 takes a 25rnd magazine from Butler Creek. There are other mfgs. The mags are hella expensive, though. There are tube loaded rifles that hold around 15rnd in the tube.

Everyone should have at least one 22lr rifle.:) I highly recommend the Marlin 25N Boltaction.
Marlin 25N boltaction $139. +
Tasco 22Mag.3x9x40mm scope $29.
= A very accurate rifle. All at your local WALMART.;)

Nothing compares to .22's for cheap fun. Even my cheapest reloads fun 2.5 times as much $ as .22 ammo. Best deal on a .22? CZ 452 and nothing else for me!

I have nothing against bolt action .22lr's for those who like em,but give me a semi when its a 22lr.I LOVE my Remington 597 and believe youd have a hard time finding a more accurate adult sized 22 rifle.Dont go buy a Ruger 10/22 based on other peoples advice.See if YOU like em,i dont.;)

Everyone should have a .22 rifle. You pick the one you like. Most all reputable brands make a good rifle. Many people swear by CZs. I have a 10/22. I am small of stature, so it works for me ok.
As noted there are hi-cap 10/22 mags available, but they are getting rare and so, as noted, expensive. Load up on lot's of cheap 10/22 ten rounder mags.
Personally, after buying and handling a Winchester 94 30-30 lever action, I am itching to purchase a lever action .22 with a hi-cap tub fed magazine. For fun and simplicity, a lever action rifle, for me, is tops.
AMMO IS CHEAP - it don't get any cheaper. 50 rounds will cost you about 2 bucks.

I 've had a Remington 522 "Viper" for 8 years and it's still a blast to shoot at bowling pins, squirrels, etc.!

You need a .22. Buy a new or used 10/22, stock up on 10rd clips, buy lots of ammo, and enjoy.
500 rds of .22 is about $10. Not as hard on the pocketbook.

A few people have stated in this thread and in others stuff like
"Everyone should have a .22 rifle"
My question is why..
Im probably gonna get one so when i take my other rifles up to shoot that i can have something to shoot inbetween big guns to save time and money.
Thanks for suggesting the models and if i will have to check some places out..thanks

Nothing more cheaper than .22 lr.
For that $50 you could have 3000-3500 rounds of .22 lr. (I've seen Rem Thunderbolt as low as $7/brick).
Get yourself some of those reactive metal targets for more fun.
My question is why.
Well, why did you get the SAR-1?
For extremely cheap fun to up to serious expensive target shooting can be done with .22 lr.

Why do you need a .22? Well, for one thing, you can shoot all day. For another, it'll fill the pot with small game. It provides practice in honing your skill in riflecraft---breathing, holding, trigger squeeze, etc.

If you want to plink and burn up ammo as quickly as possible get a semi-auto. The ubiquitous 10/22 is OK, but I also like the Marlin 60 - tube fed. You can't go wrong with either. Keep an eye out for Remington Speedmaster (I think that is the model, full size tube fed semi)
If you want to practice more accurate target type shooting I can't suggest anything other than a CZ-452 in any flavor you like. The Lux and Special models have GREAT iron sights, plus you can scope them if you like. The American and Varmint do not come with iron sights. I have the Special model with beech stock and also one of the 28" barrel Ultra-Lux models. They are super accurate. I love shooting .22's they are quiet so I can practice in my own back yard and they are cheap to shoot. I also recommend getting a .22 pistol to practice your handgun technique. You can't stop with just one .22 though be warned. I think I have 2 pistols, and maybe 10 rifles chambered in .22LR

Chet;
Yup, get a .22. Adjust your targets accordingly. In other words, a tin can at 100 yards for the .22 can be just as challenging as a 600 yard target for military high-power. The marksmanship skills don't change just because the caliber does.
As an example: In NRA 50 foot indoor competition, the center of the bull is about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
To max your score, you have to hit it, with open sights, handheld, no rest. It's not easy.
If you do scope the .22, I'd suggest either getting a dedicated .22 scope, that has the parallax set at 50 yards, or a scope with an A/O. Personally, I prefer an A/O, but that's just me.
Get a .22 & have some fun!

Should you get a .22??? YES
At last count I've got 6 rimfires---Sure I've got the AR's and AK's and larger caliber bolt guns---But even shooting a bunch of the cheapest 7.62x39 rounds will put you in the poor house---fast. If done all the time.
The .22 will give you plenty of trigger time---while only costing you $10 for a whole days shooting---one of my .22's always comes out with me to the range---usually bring a box or 2 of cheap 9mm for the G19 too---to keep my pistol skills up.

Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597 are pretty inexpensive. Marlin makes a whole host of inexpensive .22's.

The Marlin is a good quality gun. Especially the bolt action.

Another vote for the Ruger 10/22 if you want semi-automatic.
Those Russian target guns are looking very promising and you should look into that if you want a bolt gun.
BTW, my latest (and hopefully last acquisition since I'm out of safe space again) is a Marlin 92 in 22.
Whatever gun you get, you won't regret getting a 22. They are such a joy to shoot and you can blast away all day w/out denting the wallet.

Thanks for the info and suggestion guys i very much appreciate it.My last question is "Is buying used gonna be ok"..thinking about looking in paper for one that is hella cheap..Im 25 years old and only make 10 bucks an hour so any money i can save is worth it..thanks

Buying used is OK if you know how to inspect the gun. Check the bore and check the chamber area for signs of dryfiring. Check the action for function.
BTW, most of the guns I buy today are used including that well used and well preseved Marlin 92.

Why to get a .22?
They are fun. Fun in an "8 year old with a BB gun" kind of way.
The ammo is cheap, and chasing a tin can around with a Ruger Mark II all afternoon is guaranteed to put a smile on almost anyone's face.
My wife really enjoys shooting trap, but isn't into rifles and pistols very much. However, one afternoon we took a Ruger Mark II and a CZ-452 Lux to the range, along with a brick of ammo. She had a wide grin the entire time and probably went through twice as much ammo as I did.
The fact that even inexpensive .22s can often outshoot customized "manly" caliber guns and are deadly on a wide variety of small game is just a bonus IMO.
Besides, how can you not like something that usually shoots better if you DON'T clean the bore?

Id pass on a used .22lr unless you know its history. If price is the real concern, get a Savage semi at Wal-Mart for $98.00.I dont like it as much as my 597 but its still a fine shooter in its own right and mine has been 100% reliable with different brands of ammo.Stick with iron sights for right now,and later you can scope if you want to.

Everyone should have at least one .22 rifle, and for several reasons:
A) they're cheap to shoot,
B) when you're teaching a novice to shoot, they'll likely be less intimidated with a .22 than with an '06,
C) .22's can be capable of tremendous accuracy,
and D) if you have to kill a critter in your yard, a .22 with subsonics won't scare the neighbors as much as an AK or '06.
I've got 3 so far, a Marlin 60, an AR-7, and a Cricket bolt action single shot I bought last year for my (then) 5 year old. I also plan on adding a 10/22 to the collection soon, and maybe a Rossi .22 / 410 combo one of these days.

If it's not too late to propose a different rifle, the Romanian trainers that have been brought in the last few years have a great reputation, and are way less than $100. That being said, it's hard to go wrong with a 10/22 from WallyWorld.

Americans should be issued .22 rifles at birth.
"here's your birth certificate... and here's your rifle":D
