From what I have seen recently, brand new shooters of shotguns but old hands with rifles, have the most trouble with "tip #3" in the link. They may understand but instinct is hard to overcome (aiming rather than pointing).

Vet,

You're dead on. I'm not a new shooter, but in the last three years, 95% of my shotgunning has been aimed fire with slugs and buck.

Went out today with Dave Mac to try out a new Superposed on the trap field and I really had to concentrate to not spot shoot and keep the gun moving in front of the bird.

Hope to fix that with some consistent, quality time on the trap and skeet fields!!:D

For me, most of my shooting until about 5 years ago was with a rifle. The only time I used a shotgun was for bird (pheasant) hunting. Since most of them were straightaway shots, I could get by with looking at the bead (and I know I shouldn't). So I still have to focus to keep from aiming. As soon as I miss a clay on the skeet field, I did one of two things. Aimed or stopped my swing. And they usually go together for me. I even took the bead off one of my shotguns. Then I have to fight looking at the vent rib line. It sure would be nice to have the vision some people do to see the shot cloud(or claim they do). I have tried putting a little graphite in the shot on reloads but then I just get a puff of black smoke. Not much but it doesn't seem to follow the shot cloud either. Knowing exactly where the shot went would sure help fix things. (shooting high, low, behind, in front of -- 4 different people watching and sometimes 4 different opinions.) *sigh*
