I'm trying to check this with my rifle the way in says in the Lyman's book, by letting soot from a lit match cover the bullet and then close the bolt and see if theres any scraps on the bullet. If there is set a little deeper and repeat. The only problem is the matches don't leave much soot. Does some have some thing else they put on there bullet to check this? I know about the tool that does this for you but I'm trying to seat them right now.
Thanks

Try a wax candle. It gives off more soot...The best way without spending more money is to take a fired case that has not been resized and fit the bullet you intend to shoot into the case leaving it a bit long and chambering it slowly. You will feel the bullet engage the led lands and be forced into the case. Remove the case carefully and measure it and set your loaded round back the desired amount (less then the "test" case and bullet).

Use a marker but make it a black "Dry-Erase" type instead of the common "permanant" kind, Dry markers show the rifling contact better.
And don't worry too much about exactly where the rifling contact is made, just get close. You only need a decent seating reference for later adjustments anyway.
