I just put down a deposit on my first 10/22 (too much I'm afraid -- everything is so expensive in CA :(). What set of accessories do people recommend for general shooting? So far I only have an automatic bolt release on my list. How difficult are these parts to install for the semi-mechanically-inclined?

You need to go here

www.rimfirecentral.com

and spend a couple of days browsing.

First you need either a Volquartsen hammer (DIY $35) or TriggerGuard 2000 (drop-in, with ext.mag.release, bolt hold open and trigger overtravel), to reduce the trigger pull. I went with the latter.

Next, you need a new barrel--Green Mountain is best bang for buck.
Then a stock, into which you will bed the barrel with some epoxy or marine-tex.

Good shooting to ya.

IMO, the absolutely highest priority mod for the 10/22 (current manufacture) is to work on the trigger or replace it with an aftermarket one to improve pull wieght. If you do just one thing to the 10/22, that is it. The rest is gravy.

What is your intended use? I'm not much on gussying up for "cool", which is what a lot of add-on stuff seems like to me...

I definitely concur about trigger improvements. A buddy of mine worked mine over, some 20 years ago. It still has way too much sear engagement, but at least it's smoother and has a more reasonable pull-weight.

Mine seemed real picky about ammo. After trying some ten or more different brands and styles, I found that QuikShok gives the best groups. Other folks find other brands to be better...

I'm not looking for "cool" either, just things that will make the rifle more enjoyable for range use. Replacing everything but the receiver is not what I have in mind. To be more concete: with $100 or less, what would you do with a stock 10/22?

The best money I have EVER spent on any gun purchase was the $100 I spent for the Clerke barrel/Houge stock combo from J&G. I hated my 10/22 before that....now it is among my favorite guns. It went from shooting an inch at 25 yards on a good day....

....to shooting 1/2" groups at 50 yards and ~1 inch groups at 100 yards. This is with Winchester XPert bulk ammo from Walmart!!!!

The second best money I have EVER spent was the drop in Volquartsen hammer for $32.

Very few times in my gun-related buying experience has something actually exceeded my expectations...

These two additions beat my expectations in SPADES! And the most unbelieveable part was that they were for paltry sums of money!

I wish ALL aftermarket enhancements for all my firearms would deliver the bang for the buck and performance improvements that I received with the above. YMMV

Curse you, Hkmp5sd! :D

Maybe someday, in a class III-friendly state...

Clark Custom Deluxe Hammer/Trigger Kit - $55.25 - Gives a smooth 2-3 pound trigger with overtravel adjustment and includes a sear that provides a quick bolt release.

Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor - $9.50

Weaponkraft Bolt Recoil Buffer - $6.00

The only things I put on my 10/22 are a sling and better sights. I spent $40 on a Williams Guide Receiver Sight set. Better sights are a must for the 10/22 IMO, and I like to shoot with the sling. I may end up getting the Clark custom trigger/hammer kit, but as a fun plinker/training rifle a my 10/22 works great for me with just better sights and a sling. YMMV, of course.

#1 Volquartsen Extractor
#2 Aftermarket Hammer

Sooner or later, you'll go all the way.

If you're smart enough to install the auto bolt release, you're smart enough to make your own. I made mine in about an hour with a small file while I watched True Grit. www.rimfirecentral.com has all the information you could ever hope for.

I have been down the 10/22 road. I actually became obsessed with the 10/22 at one point. I spent a lot of money and have a totally bling bling 10/22.
If I was starting over, the first thing to do is to put a scope on it. I am not talking about a cheap POS scope, I am talking about something that costs significantly more than the $100 you mention. That would be my #1 priority. The caliber of the rifle, and/or the cost of the rifle has absolutely nothing at all to do with how much you spend on a scope. A riflescope is a precision optical instrument. You don't get precision optical instruments for $50. There is no free lunch. Yes, you can get by with less, in fact you can get by with none. You can get by with no 10/22, but I wouldn't want to. The quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten.

The best accessory I ever bought for a 10/22 is the integral suppressor. A must have, best buy item.

HKMP5SD,

What make is your supressor? Would you buy it again? I've had an itch for something like that

That's not mine, but I *do* want a suppressed 10/22. It's on my list of things I gotta have. Also want a suppressed MkII. The one in the picture is an Israeli military "sniper" 10/22.

Dump the "scope base" and put a Weaver on it. Nice.

Volquartsen hammer--reduced my trigger from 8 lb to 2.

VQ exactedge extractor. Had too much trouble extracting duds before.

VQ bolt buffer. I like to hear less metallic pinging.

Zepher Eagle peep sight. Nice sharp, black front post for contrast with paper targets.

Trigger shim washers--had extras anyway from another use.

1-inch nylon strap that came with a non-gun product.

I just did the automatic bolt release modification with a Dremel like everyone else. 15 minutes and a cutting bit, rather than a stone grinding bit, is all it takes.
