ATF and late-production Imbel FAL receivers?

A customer at the shop yesterday told me something disturbing, to the effect that ATF has ruled that it is now illegal to build a FAL(at least in a configuration approximating an "assault weapon") on Imbel receivers dated after 2000 - the date stamp can be found inside the magazine well.

Any truth to this, or any explanation/exposition available?

Thanks in advance!

Go to FALFILES.com haven't seen anything like that there and I'd bet they'd be posting up a storm if it was true. I'd say customer is wrong.

That's a new one on me. "Assault weapons" have been banned for a good while now.

The only controversy that I've ever heard about FAL recievers were the legality of pre ban Pac West import recievers. As for manufacturing rifles with recievers made after 2000, DSA does it everyday.

ATF confiscated a FAL-esque rifle from a friend of mine. He had the misfortune to buy it from M&N armory. My understanding was that it was an American-made receiver, marked something other than 'eff-aye-el,' and was legal in every way, including being duly reg'd in CA. Nevertheless, I doubt he'll ever see it again... :(

Ok, what were the circumstances behind this "seizure" of an otherwise legal rifle. Come on give us the details!!!:banghead:

Sorry, don't really have any juicy details. I had seen the rifle in question, and although I'm not an expert, I have no reason to doubt it was an American-made reciever. AFAIK it was 'illegal' by discretionary determination of the agent.
