Suggestions on what shotgun to buy.

Hi, there. Greetings from Kuala Lumpur. I'm very new. Can anyone help me to choose the most suitable shotgun for me since I'm going to get my shotgun license soon. Well, being asian, i'm relatively small (5' 4" and 67 kilos). I'm thinking of buying benelli nova pump since the price of semi autos are quite high here. Can anyone give me suggestions. TQ.:)

The Nova is an excellent choice. I doubt that you could find a better gun for your climate.

Thanks, and how about the recoil? Will it be too hard for my small frame? I will primarily use the gun to protect my young rubber trees from monkeys, boars etc. I think the black synthetic stock will be great here in this kind of climate.:)

You might be better off with a marine stainless/synthetic like the Mossberg. 12ga recoil will likely be somewhat much with hot buckshot, but there are inexpensive slip-over recoil pads. OTOH, a wood stock will allow you to cut it down if you need a shorter length of pull...

Benelli Nova is also made in 20 gauge, and there is a "H2O" model designed for wet environments (polymer, stainless, and nickel).

You guys wouldn't recommend the SuperNova over the Nova? I've read a number of people here state that it has better recoil control (primarily due to the ComforTech gel pads) and I read an article somewhere that said it could be better for people with small frames.

Soo... what shot size are you supposed to use for monkeys?

Welcome, Eyan. A couple things....
The Nova's stock does not lend itself to modification well. A person your size may have trouble with it. A shotgun with a wood stock that can be easily altered to fit would make a better choice.
Try a Remington 870, a Winchester 1300, an Ithaca 37 or one of the Mossberg pumps, either a 500 or 590. All of these are good....

There are numerous low-recoil loads, but a 20g might be a better bet. Also, check the fit of as many guns as you can find.

The problem is that there is not much of a choice here. We can only apply for 12ga shotguns. There are several dealers here in KL(I think not more than 6) so the availability of different models and manufacturers is hard to get. They have mossberg but in 20" only. I guess I have to stick with the nova. By the way I'll use no #4 for monkeys and buchshots for boars.

On the 2nd thought, maybe I will check the other models of pumps from the dealers. Well it makes sense about the stock that will fit me good. Wish me luck!:D

If you are 5' 4" you should consider the Ithaca 37; stocks of other modern guns may not fit you. Older Marlin guns (model 28, 43, 44, etc) will fit you, but they probably aren't available in Kuala Lumpur.
I must ask...what will you use this shotgun for? Is there hunting in Maylasia, or is your gun to be for defense?

Another consideration is whether you are right or left handed. If you are left handed, the Ithaca 37 is bottom ejection as I recall. So is the Browning BPS. If you are right handed most of the others are good choices. I would probably go with the Rem. 870 or Mossberg 500. Another consideration is where you prefer the safety. The Browning and I think the Mossberg have them on the top tang. The others are in the area of the trigger guard. Good luck.

I will primarily use it to protect my land (rubber tree estate) from monkeys, boars etc. Yes, we can hunt in Malaysia, but of course u must have a permit for that. Checked the mossberg 500 today, they have it here and the price is lower than the nova.

Hello,
I am a huge fan of the Mossberg 500/590 family of shotguns. I have a safe full of them.
However, I recently acquired a Nova Tactical Pump. For what you describe, and with your frame, I'd recommend the Nova.
The longer forend on the Nova helps mitigate the issues commonly experienced by short framed individuals. Because the forend overlaps the receiver during cycling, even shooters with shorter arms (I count myself among them) are able to cycle the action comfortably with a 14.25 (362mm) LOP stock. Hogue makes a wonderful 12" LOP stock for the Mossbergs, but you have a trade-off of additional recoil depending on the model you attach the stock to.
The ergonomics of both Mossberg and Nova are quite good, but different from each other. The Ghost Ring sights on the Nova make it win by a nose for the description of needs you describe.
Both Mossberg (Marine) and Benelli (H20) make "water resistant" models that add to the price-tag.
From my experience with both, it's hard to go wrong with either. For best fit for your situation, I recommend the Nova by the slightest of margins.
Regardless of which model you choose, the ultimate test of suitability of the tool will be the one who wields it. Practice, Practice, Practice :D.
Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat!
Best of Luck!

Thanks 4 ur advice CZ52'. I will check and see th nova soon. Checked the mossberg synthetic 18.5 " it feeled good to me. I also checked an Akkar Silah pump (marine) with rifle sight and it feeled better. I love the color tone of the marine model. Can give me comments on the Turkish made pump?

As far as I know, Akkar firearms are not sold anywhere in North America (and thus I suspect most people on here have no experience with them). I could be mistaken though. I ran a web search and I believe this is their website: http://www.akkarsilahpazarlama.com/pompali.htm
It does have some English, but most of it I can't understand.

I don't think Turkish pumps have much of a track record here in the states. Can't say about how they do in other countries. The 870, 500, and Nova all have a loyal following so whichever fits you best, I'm sure will give you good service. My only question, how is the parts availability where you are? That might be a consideration for your localtion.

For mossberg I think there will never be any problem with parts because we have here an authorize dealer in k.l. Other brands maybe hard to find the parts.
