SCUBA22 May 22, 2007, 06:57 PM I own a 24/7 pro 9mm and I've put 1800-2200 rounds through it and 1 out of every 150-200 rounds the striker will hit the primer on the round but wont fire. So I pull the trigger again (using second strike) and it still wont fire the round. After ejecting the round and finishing the mag, I reload it by dropping it into the chamber, release the slide and only then will that round fire, after the primer has been struck 3 times. I use winchester white box mostly knowing they manufacture that round with a hard primer but I dont think that is the issue, I also use remmington hollow point. I am thinking it's the striker spring... Any comments or suggestions will help. Thanks

The Real Wyatt May 22, 2007, 11:38 PM Welcome to the High Road, Scuba.
You'll find that most of us here are helpful ... but there's always the few.
Your 24/7 Pro is a fine pistol and should give you years of trouble free service. I've had one for about 18 months and have put about 8,000 rounds thru it with zero FTFs or FTEs. I trust this gun implicitly.
Did this problem just start or has it been there all along?
When you experience a failure is the primer solidly dented?
Can it be the ammo?
Have you tried another brand of ammo?
Have you spoken with Taurus about the problem?
Winchester primers aren't really all that hard so I don't think that's the problem. I shoot handloads only so I don't have any direct experience with WWB ammo although I do use Winchester primers exclusively in my handloads.
Bob M. May 22, 2007, 11:49 PM A friend of my nephew has one of these and loves it. I fired it at the range recently and it functioned perfectly. He's put many hundreds of rounds through it without any failures. Nice gun. 17+1 capacity plus reliability. He uses WWB from Wal-Mart.
ARTiger May 23, 2007, 12:02 AM Clean the striker pin channel. Sometimes this can cause what you described.
Ryan H May 23, 2007, 12:44 AM I had a PT-145 PRO (basically the same gun, only compact and .45 ACP) that had the same issues, and many others after a few hundred rounds. It seemed that right after I deemed it "reliable", it immediately turned UNRELIABLE! It went back to Taurus three times and never came back fixed, so I sold the POS for $200.
Willo May 23, 2007, 01:41 AM All striker-fired guns potentially have this "problem"... if it's one out of a couple hundred rounds it's no big deal.
Keep in mind that when you pull the trigger, you are pulling the firing pin back. Gun designers must use a spring that is strong enough to set off the primer but not so strong that it makes trigger pull hellish. The balance that is struck is intended to be the lightest spring that will set off almost all rounds. This means that one out of every couple hundred will not go off.
Glocks with their funky half-cock mechanism and hammer-fired guns do not have this problem. If it's a big deal to you, get one of those. Or, replace the striker spring with a heavier one. It will be more of a pain to pull the trigger though.
My Taurus requires a second pull about once every 100-200 shots. It doesn't bother me. It's never required a third pull. Again, if you think this will be a problem for you, don't get a striker-fired gun.
ftierson May 23, 2007, 02:03 AM Actually, the Taurus PT 24/7 PRO uses a SA pre-cocking system very similar (in concept) to the Glock...
My first guess here is that, like ARTiger mentions, the striker/firing pin channel should be cleaned...
It sometimes doesn't take much to lighten the FP impact enough to result in failures to fire...
And, if that's really it, the fix is cheap and easy to make...
:)
Good luck in fixing your problem...

Willo May 23, 2007, 02:43 AM oh,... guess I was thinking of the Mil Pro
MPanova May 23, 2007, 03:00 AM Over the last year or so I have been noticing more and more WWB rounds with hard primers. I switched to Blazer Brass for 9mm and .45 and never have a problem with that stuff, seems to be cleaner then the WWB too and cheaper.
DawgFvr May 23, 2007, 11:10 AM I agree. The primers on the cheap Winchester White Box are just too hard. I had the same problem with my PT145. Once I changed ammo, I never had a problem again. Taurus makes a fabulous auto...you just have to be smarter than the machine.
Walkalong May 23, 2007, 11:53 AM Too much oil in the channel with the spring and "firing pin" part of the striker will cause light strikes. It doesn't need more than a light coat and then wiped down.
strat81 May 23, 2007, 12:09 PM I have a 24/7 Pro 9mm and have experienced what you described with handloads only. I have since taken to liberally blasting the firing pin channel with BreakFree after every session and I have not had this problem since. I love my 24/7, incredibly reliable and very comfortable to shoot!
LACK May 23, 2007, 08:24 PM Does anyone know of a company who makes a stronger spring for this application? Or a spring for any striker fired gun? I really like the 24/7 Pro. 17+1 is a nice plus in a frame like that.
Good luck with your gun. :)
SCUBA22 May 23, 2007, 09:21 PM thanks to all for the help...
