Trying to simplify my common loads. I hate cleaning the built-up carbon fouling that gets in the grooves. very frustrating.

What is the cleanest (i.e. easy cleaning the bbl after shooting) 230FMJ load you guys use? Full-power or light-recoil loads....doesn't matter to me. My common powders are Titegroup, Bullseye, Clays. Open to other powder selections.

Of the three powders you mentioned, a full load (by the book) of CLAYS would be far cleaner than almost anything. A full book load of Clays is also pretty light recoil wise because the velocity is lower than most powders. A light load and a 185-200 grain is used by many target shooters.

VV-310 and VV-320 would also be very clean. You can get more velocity with many powders, but these (and Clays) are about the cleanest. I base this on what I see people shooting who have to fire alot of shots between cleanings at matches.

If you go to shooting lead, then it doesn't matter.

I use Clays for range/practice ammo in 45 regardless of bullet weight, with a 230 FMJ the velocity is reported to be just under 800fps but I have never had them on a chrony. That is enough to do anything that needs done, recoil is sufficient for practice and accuracy is absolutely superb in several guns. Clays is consistent, cheap to load, and nothing cleaner exists.

Try Universal Clays (which is different than Clays). An exceptionally clean powder, and as it's similar to Unique in burning rates you can load very versatile ammo at reasonable pressures.

I second the recommendation for Universal Clays--it is an exceptionally clean-burning powder. I currently use it in my 9mm, 38Special, 40S&W and 45ACP reloads, and also as a "non-magnum" powder for light loads in my 357Mag and 44Mag reloads.

My 45ACP recipe calls for 5.6 gr. of UC under a 230 Rainier TMJ bullet at an OAL of 1.265", with a light taper crimp.

I've tried VV N320, Universal Clays, and Clays in .45 ACP. Its Clays for the cleanest and softest shooting.

5.5 grains of W231 is a very clean and efficient loading for a 230 gr bullet in .45 ACP.

I ahve used the ww231 for years (started reloading when I was about 16yrs lod, and am now 42) and you can't beat the 5.5 grain load for 45auto.
