From what i have read both here and at rimfirecentral.com, only clean it once accuracy starts to suffer.

Supposedly, the 17hmr is alot like the .22lr, in that it likes a fouled barrel.

I've got a Marlin 17VS that I haven't even shot yet, I'm hoping the sun dries things up enough for me to shoot this afternoon.

The manual for my Marlin says clean only when accuracy drops off. Same as a .22.

I have known people that have never cleaned their .22 rifles - ever.

I bought the Marlin....only have 250 rounds or so through it. I haven't cleaned mine yet.

I have known people that have never cleaned their .22 rifles - ever

I didn't know we'd met, Brad.

I have cleaned mine after shooting a few and have gone several sessions without cleaning it. I could not tell any difference, BUT I treat my barrels with FASTEX. When I do clean them, it only takes 3 to 4 patches to clean, no matter how many rounds you have shot.
