I just got this one from my local gunshop. It looks absolutely beautifull.
Wood Stock, with a gloss polished blue finish. The gunshop owner guessed between 20-25 years old but I was curious if its older. Sorry my pics dont do this shotgun justice.
This also has the extended magazine.
The Serial prefix is V421***V

Go to Remington's website. Call them with the Serial # and they'll tell you exactly when it was made.
Pretty gun!

Barrel should have the manufacturing date code, left side right in front of the receiver, then check Remington Collectors Society for the decoding chart.
ps, Google that because I'm not looking for the link.

1-800-243-9700 is the number to call. Give them the serial number, they'll give you the year. I don't like the barrel code method because barrels are swapped frequently.
The V suffix means it's for 2 3/4" shells only.
Go wear it out, I double dare ya.....

I dont know if this thing has ever had any rounds through it! It's really that clean. I can't believe that someone had not picked it up earlier. I lucked out.
I checked for the number on the barrel just fore of the reciever. It said 14. according to the Remington Society website its an invalid number. I guess I will have to call Remington next week unless Ive missed something.

Barrel codes are letters. Some are hard to read. Call Remington during normal business hours.

Plain stock and short ribbed forearm says it's a Police (18" barrel) or Riot (20" barrel) gun, thus a LE trade-in. LOTS of those guns got carried a lot and shot very little. Red recoil pad says it's likely from the mid-1970s unless the pad was added later.
Earlier Police guns were just marked Wingmaster and had the same deep blue as the sporting guns, tipoffs were the short factory barrels, uncheckered plain stock and the short ribbed forearm. Police and Riot guns were made almost from the getgo of 870 production, the labeled Police guns are a relatively recent innovation.
If you plan to keep the magazine extension in place, you should add a barrel clamp to protect the threads on the end of the magazine from damage if the extension suffers an impact, otherwise all the gun needs is shooting. You definitely have a winner there.

Lee,
Thank You for the reply. Its so far the most Ive learned about the shotgun short of calling Remington.
Thanks Again,

Just called Remington on an 870 I picked up over the weekend, it had a "T" prefix and "V" suffix, and it was made in 1977. Amazing how a 30 year old gun can look so good. Now I need to begin trying to wear it out!

Nice gun, go wear it out. Wingmasters are more beautiful used and with battle stories.
