Local Politics...Involvement?

OK I didn't want to hi jack the paramilitarised law enforcement thread, but got some questions about Art's advice to me to get involved instead of sarcastic bellyaching, which was a dang good point. (I wake up cynical & grouchy, what can I say?)

But I am willing to learn and I probably should do more locally, so whats my most reasonable course of action as a starting point? I want to do my part, but am at a loss to know what the heck to do and am really a little hesitant to anyway b/c I dont want to be seen as a rabble rouser and draw hostile attention from them. They already do not like me and I wouldn't want to make it worse.

Whats a good God fearing American to do?:uhoh: :scrutiny: :D

If you are a business owner, paticipate in your local chamber of commerce to start.

:)

First, learn the names of the local front-men for the movers and shakers. City council, county commissioners. All those folks.

Go to a few meetings, just to observe. You'll learn who are the activists that make enough noise such that policy is affected (squeaky wheels get the most grease).

Campaign contribution lists--which are public info--will tell you who are the movers and shakers. These are the larger contributors.

Whether Green or Libertarian or Dem or Repub, they all want volunteers to stuff envelopes and man phone banks. You then learn who are the Inside People who do the wheeling and dealing on candidates.

You can ease your way in, being cool and halfway subtle. There are lots of issues besides gun control which affect you, and you'll be able to offer the occasional comment which can affect views on issues.

And start building your own network of other gunowners to do the same sort of thing.

Austin, Texas, is a very political town. Yet, the recent years' citywide elections have seen voter turnouts in the 8% to 11% range. Talk about voter apathy! So about 6% of the voters elect an anti-gun city council...If this ain't food for thought, what is?

Edward429451 for city council!! Oh but I'd need a good speechwriter. I don't talk so pretty sometimes.

What a drool bunch they are. I'm dissuaded already. Might be interesting to go sit in on a meeting or two. Get some behind the camera impressions.

Will they just give a list of campaign contributors out or is it something I'd have to jump through hoops for?
