I'm looking for a used semi-auto, preferable in 20 gauge, for my wife and kids to shoot. The Remington 1100 and 11-87 are high on my list. Any others that would be good to look for? I'm trying to stay below $400, given that I can get a new 11-87 for around $550. Thanks for your help.

Thanks guys, but what I was looking for were recommendations on shotguns to consider, not where to get them. I'm pretty ignorant of semi-auto shotguns, so I'd like some idea of what to look for that might be in that price range.

I've heard Mossberg has a couple semi-autos that are unstoppable. They're supposed to shoot any load, and one of them even handles magnum shells, 3.5" ones, and will still feed 2.75's if you want!

Hi there,
When considering the Remington 1100, watch out for their tactical models. A friend and I have two examples of those and with the factory barrels, they do not cycle target/light loads. The only way to fix this is to enlarge the 2 gas ports on the barrel which is a irreversible operation.
The regular 1100 works fine w/ target loads. These are nice guns in that they are reliable and cheap; parts and accessories are also available everywhere.

My 11-87 cycles anything put in it. It is the 3" version, not the 3 1/2" magnum. Never has a moments problem with it. Anything from 7/8 oz on up to 3" magnums, it goes bang and cycles perfectly.

The best used semis you will find for under $400 would be the 1100 and the 11-87. Maybe a Beretta 303 or 390 if lucky.

I just saw a youth Beretta 303a 20 Gauge for $550 and I almost bought it for my wife. It was in excellent condition.
