Where do you get the best prices and what are you paying for FMJ bullets?

I'm looking to buy target quality in 5000 ct lots. Standard handgund and rifle calibers. I live in eastern Iowa.

Your response is appreciated.

Scott

Scott - target quality and FMJ are usually not words used in conjunction with each other. SOME FMJ's are very good quality, but most are not. 55 gr FMJ's from several manufacturers have a weight spread from 50.9 to 58.9....no kidding. I weighed several different lots.

Thank you sir.

I am a relatively new reloader. I'm using cast lead now, but it makes cleaning a real chore. What do you recommend please?

what do you mean by target quality? do you mean you want submoa's at 200 yards? or do you mean your just going to be plinking? if your doing submoa's and your buying at least 5k you should call Berger, Hornady, or Sierra directly for HPBTs (they should be willing to deal with you, but i am not sure as the last time i bought direct from hornady i bought 20k) or call up powder vally and see if they will give you a good price on bulk. if your just plinking then you would want to go to a mill surplus site like iidbs.com.

I would take "target quality" to be match quality. My choice in the more economical match bullets for rifles would be Sierra, Nosler and Nosler.

If you go to the pro shop on the Nosler web site, you will many times find good deals on factory seconds. Nosler is many times my choice for match bullets.

If you are shooting IDPA type competition where you don't need great accuracy then Berry's or Ranier plated bullets work great. You can also buy Zero FMJ bullets at close to plated prices at Powdervalley.com.

i use cast lead and cleaning is nothing. nothing at all. however it depends on where you are getting your cast bullets from and how they are cast sized and lubed. I cast my own. i have always had very good luck we lee liquid alox. same time though i just hate the stickyness. its really good stuff though. then it depends on what powder and how many grains you are using. you do not load a cast bullet like a fmj. A lot of people actually prefer cast lead versus fmj for target. Depends and the target though. i like shooting metal IHMSA International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association. You cant use fmj though when shooting steel has to be lead. Your skill should be the same weather being cast or fmj. Any how if you are leading your barrel id look into the cast bullet and the powder combo. I like fmj. I love cast.

I buy their 124gr FMJ bullets for $75/1000. They shoot quite nicely, with accuracy far and above what you get with cheap steel-cased surplus crap. ;)

Scott, you didn't reveal which calibers you are reloading for. But IF you are reloading for 6.5x55 and IF you have a special reason to use FMJs, the Lapua B 343 (144 grs) is the way to go. They give me sub-MOA groups even from my Swede.

Thx Gewehr98 great prices there. Unfortunately Hi-Tech ammo has been out of .223 for a VERY long time.
