Adopted an 870 from the shelter (a.k.a. Gander)

Well, a previously enjoyed Rem 870 followed me home from Gander over the weekend. It is a 26" Remchoked 870, a little bluing worn off the magazine tube, but barrel, receiver, and stock are perfect. Slapped on a Limbsaver pad replacing the hard brown corregated Rem pad. $260 for the 870, $30 for the pad - seemed reasonably priced? Will call Remington with serial # to see when it was built. Need to take it to the skeet field this weekend to try out. This will replace a 28" Win. 1300 and a 20" 870P I have. Anyone need a 1300 or a 870P?

Good for you for taking in a Cinderella gun. No reason to give that 870P the boot though, 870s aren't jealous at all. They don't mind sharing the same safe with one another.
For that matter, the 1300 is worth keeping too. Paid for and doesn't eat anything, better than money in the bank too.

I'll be ignorant and ask what the "P" stands for on the 870?
I like and use the 1300. Why the change to the 870?

Milkmaster, no complaints on the 1300, just doesn't fit me well. Originally bought it for friends to use, but not many have an interest in skeet or SC (maybe I need new friends :neener:)
Called Remington, and it was made in 1977. They certainly made them nice back then! Although the receiver doesn't say "magnum", the barrel says 2 3/4" or 3"...I assumme I could use a 3" shell (not that I every have)?

No. 2 3/4 Inch barrels will fit on a 2 3/4" Receiver just fine, but do not use 3" shells. Only use 3" shells if the receiver is a magnum receiver.

Your receiver needs to be set up for 3" shells as well as having a 3" chamber. Only if your serial number ends in M do you have a factory magnum receiver.
No real need for 3"ers anyway unless you're after turkey or waterfowl... 2.75"s will do fine for 99% of shotgunning.
Shoot it in good health, welcome to PETP.

Thanks for the info. Lee and Avenger. Wasn't thinking of shooting any 3" shells anyway. My SG's are only used for clays, and defending my happy home - 2 3/4" shells do just fine. Prior owner must have put on the 3" barrel for the RemChokes I'm guessing.

1977. That must be a Wingmaster right?
Nice find.
