Hey all,

I have posted this before but if you are in Iowa sound off or shoot me an e-mail. We have a pretty good regional group going that get together and holds fun shoots and BBQ's and we always welcome more. Nothing against em, but here in SE Iowa it seems to be nothing but shotgunners! So far we have members from as far as MO, IL, IN, and a couple that make it up from FL once in awhile.

i've been thinking of starting a thread like this....you can see where i am over to the left there. (Linn county...around the I-380/Highway 30 area ;))

i've been wanting to find some THR folks with decent collections, or even modest ones, so I can (i'll buy ammo of course ;)) try out more guns...find out what I like, and what I don't.

edit: also to find shooting buddies. going to the range is fun, but it's more fun with friends.

I've got In-Laws in and around Muscatine, Iowa & I get down to see them several times a year.

Anybody know of any good spots to shoot around thereabouts?

I have a few black rifles and few different handguns. With the diverse group we have though we have everything from .50BMG's to class III dealers!

We also usually have "private" ranges either on someones farm or a local gun club I belong to that on most days we have all to ourselves!

I will keep informed when upcoming shoots are or if you want to come this way sometime give me a shout!

IAJack: where are you?

In my area (CR, IC, Coralville) there are a few ranges. I mostly patronize the one by swisher (by the reservoir off 965). Other than that, there's Linn County Izzak Walton League (77/yr membership), Matzel Bridge by Viola (nice, but out of the way), a shooting club in Central City with a nice setup (again, membership...cheaper than IWL though, and far away). I saw on Wheretoshoot.org that there's a shooting club in North Liberty that I plan to check out.

Other than those, it doesn't seem like there's many places to shoot in/around CR.

And i think it's "eye-wayns" :D

I am in the Central Iowa area. They closed the really nice public range I used to go to (Badger Creek). Now the nearest one is Banner Just south of Des Moines, but it leaves alot to be desired. It's at the end of a dead end road in a river bottom. When I have been brave enough to check it out, it appears to be some sort of trap/garbage dump/place for undesirables to do un-natural things/ect. One of the guys I used to meet at BC also had third hand knowledge of armed firearm theives that worked there as well. So, being armed is one thing, but not having a second set of eyes is taxing on ones nerves. To give you an idea BC was a 45 minute drive and Banner is like 5-10 tops.

IAJack: I might have to make it over/down there sometime. That's prolly just over an hour away from me...i used to drive to pella to visit a GF on a regular basis, and you're a smidge closer. Sometime when I'm heading out to DM, I should swing down.

North Liberty, Johnson Co. here.

Future home of the Muslim Youth Camps of America training center located on 106 acres of Federal land unless we can find a way to prevent Harken and the Army Corps from granting the lease. This issue could be a thread in itself.

North Liberty? Heck, i drive through there every day on the way to work (hint: it's a grey/purple building on Oakdale off 965). I get off work at 4:30 M-F...we should go shooting sometime at the "pit" after I get off work.

Theres a county park southwest of CR with a 600 yard rifle range.

I can't remember the name of the town it's located by, i'll look on a map tommorrow to see if i can find it.

I'm located in Shellrock, north of Cedar Falls about 10 miles. Blackhawk county has a public park with a 100 & 200 yard rifle range,[ 3 benchs] a 50 yard & 25 yard pistol range. with several stations to shoot from.

Free to public use.

no kidding? i thought i had checked out all the ranges in the area. i'd like to know what/where that is...as long as they've got more than just a 600y range.

Cedar Rapids, myself. I usually go to the Swisher range also, but I just found one in Palo that I feel will become my new hot spot being only 7 miles away. There's also Matzel's bridge about 45 minutes away in B.F. Egypt somewhere...

just about a s far from Oskaloosa as you can get and still be in the same state.

I do know some guys from your area though, ever meet a former marine, last name Stein?

You can put me on your list but I doubt I will ever get that far to shoot.

IAJack
June 27, 2003, 08:13 AM
Sounds like alot of you guys are from up towars the CR area, I can travel up that way too. If you can find a place that doesn't cost a mortgage to shoot at and doesnt have any BS rules like rate of fire or mind some really loud booms once in awhile. Heck always willing to go just about anywhere to hang and shoot with like minded ppl and nowhere in Iowa is really that far.

As a couple mentioned, some of those "county" open shooting ranges scare the begezus outa me..partially why I joined the Ikes. I have seem more usafe crap go on at the one around here than I care to mention. Pretty bad when you feel the need to carry a gun downrange with you not only to keep it from getting ripped off but to return fire if nessacary!

I believe you might be referring to a range in Washington. I believe that you need some sort of certification that you get from the park ranger in order to be able to shoot there. At that's the way it was when I first arrived in IA 9 years ago.

I belong to the West Liberty Gun Club which has good folks and a 50ft. indoor pistol range. The outdoor range is only for pistols, rimfires, and muzzleloaders - no centerfire rifles - but the range is nice.

The public area (pit) in the Hawkeye Wildlife Area can, indeed, be a little scary due to some of the wildlife that shoots there. Mostly, though, its not too bad for plinking.

Rembrandt: If i'm a member of the CR Ike's league, can I get in to shoot over there? The one here has an electronic gate key system...not sure if it's local only or any Ike's member.

Redpath and IAJack: that pit is great...unless you're doing anything where you might need a bench, target holders, or any idea how far out it goes. You can pretty much shoot anything you want there...it's unsupervised (for now), so anything that won't destroy the place is game. (no dragon's breath, the trees might burn) People used to bring their junk out to shootup..old TV's/monitors, computers, stoves, microwaves, old propane tanks (w/o OPD...they won't fill them anymore), and all kinds of schtuff. As it's unsupervised, I'm sure any gun is game...whether it's black powder, .50BMG, class III, shotgun, rifle, pistol, and any caliber cartridge you can buy. And loud booms, or rapid fire? Heck, they're fun! I regularly dump my mag as fast as I can. It's usually not too scary, then again, I haven't been able to get down there on a saturday for a while. :D

I'm definitly going to check out the Palo and Washington ranges. Where is the palo one at? BTW, I'm going to go to the swisher one tonight after work (5-6ish) to try my new gun out if anyone wants to head out.

I don't live in Iowa but we get over to Muscatine several times a year to see the Wife's Family. She's an Iowaegian by birth.

We travel through Illinois & usually come down I-80 and cross the Mississippi over by the Quad Cities area.

Anybody know of any rifle & pistol shooting ranges in and around the Quad Cities and Muscatine areas and all areas in between both cities?

I'm not there often enough to justify joining a Shooting Club but would gladly travel to a Range that's open to the Public or a Gun Shop Range.

I fondly recall my first visit to Iowa. I was introduced to the local Gourmet Specialties, Fried Catfish, Roasted corn on the cob, Deer Venison Hamburgers and best of all, Maid Rite Sandwhiches. Yummy...:D

....most from the same ppl but a good start.

It is my hope that everyone can maybe get to know everyone else and will add them to their e-mail lists. We might not be able to get together to shoot all that often but sure be nice to get to know some more fellow shooters around the state.

We also need to band together and become a stronger group on working towards changing concealed carry status to shall issue. Unfortunatly that won't even have a chance untill we get Vilsack-O-???? out of there! Seems Iowa is always about 10 yrs behind everywhere else. Whats the outlook or status in your County? Here (Mahaska) it is pretty well a no go. I have one but it is restricted to being useless. I have been told it is illegal and could be fought but I havent the resources or connections to do so? So I just went ahead and got about every out of state permit I could. My NRA instructor staus is accepted everywhere esle..but no not in this bass ackwards state. The course they give for a permit here is a JOKE!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I an a certified pistol and defense instructor so if you or anyone you know would like a class or some pointers I'd be glad to help just for the experience and at no charge.

Unfortunately being a member at one Ikes Chapter does not entitle you access to another...each is independently operated by the local Chapter. The Ames Izaak Walton League does offer a number of "Public Shooting competitions" that are open to anyone....one of the more popular is the annual "Iowa Games" shooting events....contestants from all over Iowa attend each year. Below are links to the Ikes and some other local ranges. enjoy...

well, most of the posts being from the same numbers isn't that suprising...if that's all the people from Iowa. (not likely, but close) I'd certainly be down with a pistol class...free, reduced price, or not. IIRC, i'd need one to get a CCW anyway. Does your class qualify for that? Also, do you know if you can use a .22 pistol to qualify for CCW? I'm pretty accurate with my 22/45, but I just got my first centerfire pistol (Bersa .380) and not any good yet.

Re: Ikes membership....i was told that joining my local league makes me a member of the national IWL, but it makes sense you'd have to pay the local league to shoot on their land.

I'd love to meet up and shoot with some of ya.. I grew up in IC, so i know the "pit" and its associated mess. Still got family in Nichols, IC, CR, and DM, so theres lotsa places for an excuse to go that way :D

I'm from Cedar Rapids. Please put me on the mailing list racenutz@mchsi.com Because of my work schedule I'm limited to shooting on weekends but come spring I'll be out shooting nearly every weekend.

We also need to band together and become a stronger group on working towards changing concealed carry status to shall issue.

Currently I'm more concerned that the AWB goes down in flames.

I'm from the other side of the state & don't really know many folks from around here. Up until recently I've mostly shot handguns at Sports Outfitters on 16th Ave. I wouldn't recommend anyone go there though as the owner can be a first class Richard Head at times. I've gotten into C&R rifles lately & need to find a good place to shoot them. I've been to Matzel Bridge a couple of times & it seems like a halfway decent place.

dont mind the old man at Sports Outfitters after a while he is not as bad.

how is Matzel Bridge?

I have only shot at Sports Outfitters and the shooting range between swisher and north liberty. easy to get to from Cedar Rapids.

guess its now Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting range location looks right
from cedar rapids take 6th street head south or the interstate like your going to Iowa city take swisher exit off then right turn (should see sinclair gas station)from exit and then left turn at the lights. next turn on the right 5-7 miles down the road maybe. turn right when you see the wetlands then head straight on gravel road till you get to the range.

Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting Range
Located 2 miles North of North Liberty on Highway 965, 1.5 miles West on Swan Lake Road, 3/4 mile East of Swisher on F12, 2.5 miles South on Highway 965, 1/2 mile West on Amana Road in Johnson County.

used to be a total dump though has been cleaned up over years specially this last year. supposed to have 100 yard rifle range though large concrete tubes you have to shoot through. 25 yard pistol range also. not sure whats like as of lately. last I knew incomplete.

Isn't Muscatine the home of author Max Allan Collins, who wrote "Road to Perdition" and the novelization of "Saving Private Ryan"?

(I don't live in Iowa, but I've read several of Collins's books.)

Please send me some info, I'd love to make some new buddies (esp. gunnie buds)

I'm in Marshall Co., but have a baby coming in about a month, so I don't know how far I can travel or how long I can stay away in the near future.

I'll band together with anyone who wants to change CCW here. I have also been trying to contact CCW4IOWA lately, but havn't got a reply. Sometimes I think I'm the only one in the state who even gives a rip.

I think I mentioned this before IAJack but I used to live down in Eddyville and still get back there every other month or so. I have my own little private range at my inlaws house, but wouldn't mind going to shoot somewhere else. When I am at my inlaws I usually shoot by myself so a little company would be apreciated.

Did you guys get a new Sheriff who will issue permits??

Keep me informed if you are going to have any sort of get together in SE Iowa I will try to make it.

Steamboat Rock (Hardin County) has a state park with a rifle range (fishing and camping right there too), to my knowlege it would be free, but I've never been there so I don't know for sure. That's about as central and open to the public as I can think of. Any thoughts on this?

Many moons ago, before I developed an unhealthy interest in firearms, I attended college at the U of I in Iowa City. Great place in which to live, with lots of friendly people and a terrific faculty at the U. I still have friends living in Iowa City, and drive down there at least once a year to visit. Boy, has that city undergone a transformation in recent years! What's with all the new parking ramps sprouting up all over downtown IC??? I was sad to discover that Pearson's Drug Store at the corner of Market and Linn, with its cozy little diner in the rear that served the BEST MALTS ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET, was gone.

On a few of my recent trips to IC, I took some guns along, to introduce my friends living there to shooting. I cannot recall the exact location, but we drove out to an unsupervised shooting "range" at a gravel pit just outside of North Liberty (I believe). This "range" was a real dump, with no benches, tables, target stands or whatnot. At least we got to experiment with some "free form" shooting. :D

I might be interested in attending a shooting meet in IA, if one is arranged.

Sioux City here...and not a decent place to shoot. On top of that, the Woodbury Sheriff does not believe in CCW...overall a genuinely anti-handgun town.

I can check that park out in Hardin County and see what type of range is there, i go fishing at the state park very near there. [Pine Lake] [It has excellent camping facilities & would be a great place for a one day type of deal.] This place is called pine ridge shooting area, it is 1 mile weat of Steamboat Rock od county road S -56.

The range at the Hawkeye wildlife area would be ok also. Probably more convienient to get to for most of the guys i see located here.

Go Hawks!

I haven't noticed much Iowan activity in the short time I've looked around here, so a gathering would be cool. The farther east and the more central the better.

Later :D

PS: where is this Matzel Bridge place?

think its Matsel Bridge instead of Matzel. by Marion

linn county parks website supposed to have info though cannot access it.

http://www.linncountyparks.com/ParkInformation.asp
is working now
page for matsel bridge below its along the Wapsipinicon River
http://www.linncountyparks.com/ParkSummary.asp?ParkID=21

Matsell Bridge Natural Area contains 1624 acres of diverse terrain and vegetation, characteristic of the land along the Wapsipinicon River. Various nomadic Indian tribes common to eastern Iowa made this a favorite camping area until the late 1800's. From the mid-1800's until its acquisition by the Linn County Conservation Board in 1967, it had been farmed in one manner or another. The area has been managed since that time primarily for multi-purpose recreation. The road system is limited and peripheral in nature - most access to the area is gained by hiking in on one of the trails. White tailed deer, raccoons, and squirrel are among the woodland mammals common to this region. Wild turkey, introduced for the first time in 1976, are also becoming more abundant.

Throughout the rolling croplands, the rock bluffs and wooded ridges bounding the river, one finds almost 8.5 miles of trail on the Red Oak and Pine & Prairie trails. Matsell Bridge Natural Area is opent to hunting in season. CAUTION: No hunting is allowed in any developed or maintained areas designated as campgrounds, picnic area or public use areas.

A very unique feature to this area is the shooting range which offers both a 100 yd. and 200 yd. range, as well as a location for shooting clay pidgeons. The range is open from sunrise to sunset and has a small shelter with shooting stations at each the 100 and 200 yard ranges.

Primitive campsites are available in five different locations - many located along the Wapsipinicon River. An overnight cabin is also available and is reservable up to one year in advance of the date of use.

Check out the links below for additional information on the various attractions and facilites in this park. never been their sounds nice.

I too, live here in Iowa; in Hardin County. I would be more than glad to get together with other fellow shooter for a BBQ and informal fun shoot. Count me in. We also need to contact our state congressmen and tell them to appose the new assault weapons ban the Liberals are trying to get passed here in our state. If any Iowan wants to embrace these new anti gun attempts to further chip away at our freedoms, then let them move to the Chicago-land area!!!

RWMC, have you visited the range by Steamboat Rock? I know Pine Lake has great facilities but i have never been to the range.

Are there any fees or other stuff we need to be aware of? Could you possibly call the Hardin County Conservation board and find out about it, if you have time to do so?

This is only preliminary of course, others might have suggestions as to a shooting location that could be looked into.

Thanks - 12-34hom.

Ya know this also might be a good time to all discuss in person forming an actuall Iowans For CCW Committee if anyone would be interested. Until we all band together and work for a commen goal nuttin is going to change. Especially with the current Gv. and groups like IPGV.

Definatly a BBQ -it just goes with shooting. I suggest we have it somewhere with camping so that those coming from a ways could stay and have time to BS. Perhaps a Sat. shoot with a Sat. eve BBQ and eveing campfire BS session?

12-34hon it is in your court. I will help plan and organize too. The BBQ shuold be potluck with eveyone posting what they are bringing etc so we'd have a vairety and enough. Infact it should be required to bring something? Also I am sure passing the hat would more than cover range fees or a donation to a location somewhere if need be? I have a pretty extensive email list of shooters to invite when we get closer. Everyone should invite or bring a couple people. We will definatly have to follow rules to make it SAFE if it turns out to be a good size gathering.

Any news on the Iowa AWB? has it been passed? denied?

I read the recent laws and the only thing it prohibits is the dragon's breath and explosive rounds, nothing like AK's or anything.

Anyway, I am in Decorah, we have a range but it's expensive, 10 dollars just for their rifle range, there is a public (free) range with some benches and up to a 100 yards rifle ranges I believe, not too bad, I went there a few times with my inlaw's .22.

I'd love to meet up with other shooters, there aint too many out here...
