I am posting this on both The High Road and the Smith & Wesson Forums. I just purchased a Smith & Wesson 4506 that is marked 645 on the receiver. Here are the particulars.

4506 marked 645, serial TBU26XX.
Definitely a third generation pistol.
Curved back strap polymer wrap around S&W checkered grip.
Unmarked night sights, possibly Meprolight.
Condition is about 98%, matte stainless.
Metal base plate magazine with orange plastic follower, 8 rounds.
Trigger pull is fairly light and very smooth, both double and single action.
Lockup is tight, a little slide movement, no barrel movement at lock up.
No box or papers.
Asking price was $500, final price was $450.

So, how did I do? I am thinking about shooting this one a lot. Maybe remove its sharp edges and possibly polish the flat surfaces of the slide and the raised flat portion of the receiver. Maybe even tread into the nether regions of 45 Super.

You did OK.

What you have there is a transition model. The 645 later became designated the 4506. That's probably the reason for the different slide and frame numbers.

They are generally regarded as good guns. Hopefully, one of our S&W experts can give more details.

Get yourself a Galco Miami Classic rig, some Armani or Versace clothing, and loafers without socks, and you'll have the full Sonny Crockett outfit.

The 4506 is a tank. There are a lot of folks who think the 45xx series is the best that S&W ever produced (right behind the folks who think the 10xx series is the best.)

I am a little too big in the mid-section to be Sonny Crockett, but thanks for the thought. Galco stopped making holsters for the big Smiths because of all the little external changes S&W made in a few short years, but Bianchi still makes belt holsters for them.

That's about the going price for S&W .45s in Virginia.

I saw two at gunshops in the past couple of weeks, both 4506s, though, for around the same price.

I may just spring for one one of these days.
