Why are handguns so expensive in Arizona

After moving to AZ from Maryland a few years ago, I expected to see rock bottom prices on all firearms and handguns in particular.
It's three years later and I'm still continually shocked by the high prices I see in this supposedly gun friendly state.
Today's example - Bass Pro just opened their new store in Mesa (I live down the road in Phoenix) and they were asking $579 for a S&W M&P 9mm. I could order one today on line for $399 from another state, but why should I have to?
Why is AZ so pricey?

As a permanent and forever Arizona Resident, I think your just looking in the wrong places. Gunnies don't go to Bass Pro OR Cabelas for guns. The service sucks. Go someplace local like SGC (ok they have high prices too, but a selection to die for). Try Pistol Parlor, Lone Wolf, Bear Mountain. Or you can give me a call in a month...
So that's my news, we've met with the ATF and we should have our FFL in the next four weeks. :D:D:D
My wife tells me to stop smiling so much and she took away my credit card...
But seriously, Personal Choice Outfitters should be up and running July 1 (hopefully) and we're going to be an order only shop. We'll find you the best price and if you find one in another state we'll do low cost (compared to the rest of Arizona, avg. price forty bucks), 20 dollar transfers. We'll order you what you want, when you want. Website should be running June 24th.

It's called free market capitalism.
In particular to Bass, they have "place commodity". That is the same reason hot dogs cost $5 at the ball park. THEY ARE THERE. Bass is in Mesa, you do not have to go hunting around, just walk in.
The price is determined by what the market will support.

The only sporting goods store I will look at guns is the Sportsmans Wharehouse. They seem to have pretty decent prices. Other than that, I always go to a gun store.

Pistol Parlour in Mesa is a good place.
When I lived in Scottsdale, they got a lot of my business.
Lone Wolf is too if you don't mind driving a gazzillion miles into Glendale!!
Another decent little shop I found just recently is AZFirearms in Avondale.

These guys are closest to me since I live in Buckeye.
If you don't mind taking a pleasent drive up the hill, J&G is in Prescott.

Thanks for the info.
hrgrisso I'd be grateful if you could let me know when you're taking orders, I'm assuming you're in the Phoenix area?

Gun prices have gone up significantly in the last few years and will probably continue to rise. I don't think it has much to do with where you live.

I visit AZ for a month or two each year and find that they do like their guns there - at least to the tune of being higher priced than around my parts.
Pawn shops perhaps have some of the better buys, but the regular shops and gun shows, and the ever present swap meets have yet to produce anything close a bargin when I was looking.

Not too cheap in Ohio either. Prices are up every where... However with some searching bargains can be found.

Yet there are still exceptions like Bud's Gun Store in Kentucky.
$399 for a full size M&P 9mm - I wish AZ had a store that could match that.

As stated, Cabela's and especially Bass Pro are priced high; BPS was $80-$100 higher for M&Ps than even Scottsdale Gun Club, itself not a discounter.
I got a decent deal at Phoenix Gun Center (on 19th Ave between Peoria and Cactus) on my Kahr PM9. It was $485 (April 2006) when everyone else was in the high fives and low sixes. I would go there again.

But put it in perspective - you canget any gun you want, certainly not the case in MD, or CA (where I came from).

Lone Wolf looks especially good value. I'll be taking a trip out to Glendale.

J & G Sales is just a short drive to Prescott for fairly priced milsurp.
Good if you don't have a C&R, or if you just like to see what you are buying.
+1 on Pistol Parlour in Mesa.

Newton,
Glad you were able to search out Lone Wolfe. They are a good shop. I knew the original owner. They should take care of you. As to when we'll be up and running, should be July 1. We've met with the ATF recieved approval, just waiting the few weeks till it processes. And yes we're in Phoenix.
