Hi all,

I am looking for some inexpensive bullets to reload in .400 CORBON, and I already have had good results with Rainier 200gr HP bullets in my .45ACP reloads. I would like to use 135gr HP bullets over AA#5 (which I already use for reloading .380). This should get me about 1400fps.

My question: is this too fast for copper plated bullets? Should I really be using FMJ bullets for 1400fps? I have read recommendations that anything over 1200fps is too fast for the plated bullets.

too fast, I have a load for .40s&w that puts them at 1450 fps, they are scattered (deformed) at that speed. Maybe leading too, not really sure on that, didn't make enough to find out.

Try Nosler's 135's, much better for high fps rounds. Usually 24$ for 250 on the web.

I would try a few to see how they work.

I use 125 gr Berry plated bullets in one of my hot .357 loads which chronographs about 1430 fps. The accuracy is acceptable and I have not seen any evidence of leading.

Excessive pressure! Back off.

These loads are a GUIDELINE for load development in your pistol. Reduce a minimum of 10% to start. Reduce the MAX loads by 15% to start. Be Carefull.

You are pushing the Raniers to their limits here. I did not chrono any but the last load. The AA#9 load showed much promise and Universal Clays in the right amount with the right primer should do very well. It showed promise as well. AA# 5 should work fine as well. I have not tried it yet. Now that I have some WSF I need to try it. It should do well and Corbon gives data for it in all the bullet weights they list data for. ( See Mr Smiths Data Link)

My .400 Cor-Bon barrel, which I never use since I broke down and bought the 10mm, would only semi-reliably feed round nose bullets. It would just misfeed every other type of bullet I tried.

Anybody want to buy the barrel, bushing, dies, and empty cases for .400 Cor-Bon?:banghead:

Thanks for the info guys. I do think I'm right on (or just over) the limit for a plated bullet here, but Cabelas is sold out of Nosler 135gr .400 JHPs right now and was just thinking about giving the Rainier bullets a try. I will just wait until the Nosler bullets are back in stock since I don't shoot the .400 very often.

Right now, I'm using Starline brass and Rainier 165gr HPs over 9.0gr of AA#5 with a Winchester small pistol primer, and I'm pretty satisfied. I have been setting the OAL about 0.010 longer due to bullet setback (I don't know the actual length off the top of my head). The heavier bullet keeps the velocity down around 1200fps. It still shoots about 2" lower at 25 feet compared to 200gr .45ACP.

They cycle perfectly, and I'm really happy with the results considering I have another caliber to play with for a measly $45 barrel investment from SARCO. I fit the barrel and polished the ramp myself, and it runs 100%:D

I gave up on the lighter weight Raniers as well for the same reason. I don't shoot it a lot. Might as well shoot the jacketed bullets at high speed.

I do want to try the 180 Grain Berry's I have that I shoot in the .40. :)
