I was at an auction Saturday night with my girlfriend and her family and was bored out of my mind. Having not bid on anything the entire night I was supprised to see a single barrel New England Firearms Pardner 12 guage 3" Modified with a 26" barrel waiting to be auctioned. It was in good shape and I though what the heck. Anyway I brought it home for $60, not bad for a gun in nearly new condition.
I've always been a fan of single-barrel break-open shotguns. An old sawed off one of my Grandfathers was the first gun I ever shot. My other grandfather kept an old one nearby for unwelcome guests. Anyway, I already have a Benelli Supernova pump with a 24" barrell. What kind of hunting or sport shooting would this basic little shotgun be better suited for? If I can't find a good excuse to use it I may be tempted to trade it towards another gun.

That's a good price for that particular gun. And it's a good gun too. Lots of people use 'em for truck guns or barn guns or any use where a single shot is sufficient- which is a lot more situations than some folks think.
If you don't have an immediate use for it, park it in a corner of the closet. Something will come up that you will find that shotgun will do just fine for.

If I had a nickel for the number of times a shotgun exactly like that one has gotten the job done I could retire. Some of the deadliest wingshooters I have ever seen learned how to shoot using exactly that type of gun. Congrats on a great purchase.

If you like it and plan to shoot it alot, I would recomend a good recoil pad. This NEF singls do kick like the dickens. That being said, they are one of the most underrated firearms made today. Excellent quality and reliability for the $!

"Truck Gun" comes to mind quickly..OK if it gets beat up a bit.
Parked by the back door... fer when th' fox raids th' henhouse
Install good pad, use light loads for a 'trainer' gun (I learned with a Savage/Stevens Mdl 94B in 16Ga)
Make up some "popcorn" loads for clearing barn of obnoxious pests, without blasting extra.......ahhhhh ventilation in said barn.
Everybody should have a single-shot shotgun in their "Artillery Locker". May need to loan to a family member or a hunting bud that somehow broke his primary gun
Last, but not least... "Just For Grins."

Get a stock shell holder...the spandex kind they sell for $6, and put 6 shells in it. Throw in your truck, garage, or barn as needed. Excellent all purpose tool.
