Got a letter from the ATF

Hey guys i got letter last week from the A.T.F.E. about the V.t. incident. Did any of you other C&R holders get one of these? To summarize it, it said that to help prevent mentally ill people from obtaining guns it requires diligent s on the part of all FFL holders. So i would ass(of)ume that all holders of FFLs got one. What do you guys think? :scrutiny:

I think I may have used that letter to pick up dog poop out of my yard - I had it in my hand at the time and their were no paper towels around.

I put mine in a file box with other inane pieces of ephemra that BATFE thinks important.
These idiots have absolutely no clue about what we C&R's do. Oh well.

I read it and thought "I'll get right on that."

I work in an industry that uses explosives and got the same letter you are talking about. It says the are working to "clarify" the 4473 :uhoh:

Yeah, I got one too. I tossed it... I'm a C&R holder, after all.

Yes, got it. Read it over-twice to make sure I hadn't missed something.

heh, I'd love to see it (like I need something more to laugh at the ATF about) is anyone has the letter and could scan it, that'd be great.

I also read it over to make sure that I had not missed anything. It was just a reminder.

I think the ATFE folks include C&R holders just to remind us that they're there. The letter certainly has zero impact on me.

I think it's simpler than that--somebody just told their secretary to do a mail-merge of the FFL database, and send out some letters. Said secretary probably doesn't get paid enough to care whether it matters for C&R's, so we get ATFMail too.

Yep, I was suprised when I recieved one as now I only have a C&R. No news of relevance. It's strictly a CYA memo, but I can see where the're comming from. I never had a problem with ATF, except about 30 years ago when an obvious agent tried to entice Me into a very obvious " Straw Man Transaction ". Only a vegetable would have fallen for that one. Since C&R holders can legally sell some guns to improve their collection, some of this information the BATF sends out in mass-mailings is pertinent.

You mean you can't buy Glocks through the mail and sell them to just anybody like I read on the Brady site? They wouldn't lie about something like that.... would they?

I got it and read it over. It mostly dealt with the 4473, which is not something a 03 FFL has to contend with, so it got round-filed.
It won't change anything I do- I have yet to sell any pieces of my collection, and when (or if) I ever do, I am not likely to sell to someone who is not one of the following: 1) a fellow 03 FFL, 2) someone I know rather well.

So, now all FFLs are to become naive psychologists? Besides, I though the C&R was for collecting, not for turning around and selling full-time. Am I wrong?

yeah i just thought it was odd that they sent it to 03 FFL holders. Like most of you i read it twice and put it in file 13. :neener:

I was glad to have received the letter, I think it was targeted toward 01 FFLS, but it was interesting to read the kind of info gunstores & dealers receive from the BATFE. I don't think they want anyone to be a mind reader but just wanted to keep dealers in the loop as far as changes in the way states may be entering mental history into the criminal background check database.
I recently got my C&R but I thought everything I have received from the BATFE so far has shown a positive attitude toward FFLs.

I'm pretty sure that it said it was an open letter to all FFLs.

I'd be wary of any letter sent by any federal agency. A large percentage of the employees have a brain about the size of a pea.

Hey now not all of us who work for the Feds are stupid. The really stupid ones can be found in the supervisory ranks. How to you think they made supervisor?
