Ok, I finally paid my Kahr P-40 out of lay-a-way and got my holster for it. Now I'm just waiting for my TN HCP to arrive. I cleaned it and lubed it before shooting it and then bought a box of Winchester .40S&W. It was the 100 round value box from Wal*Mart for $14. I loaded 2 mags, fired them perfectly. Loaded them again (6 round capacity, ea) and from then on when it gets to the last round the slide doesn't seat perfectly. It's like the slide goes all the way back down and stops 1/4" before it should. I gave it a little tap on the back of the slide and it clicks and goes in.... fires perfectly.

I've only got 50 rounds through it. Is this part of the break in or does anyone happen to know if it's a problem with the Kahr's? I'd hate to send it in already. Either way, I'm going to put a few hundred rounds through before I consider sending it in. Just wanted to get some input beforehand. Also, I might want to tell you that I'm pretty gun-stupid. I'm good with safety issues, and know how a gun works, but I'm definately no gunsmith. So please ignore my ignorance.

Howdy,

When I got my K40 it would start to fail to go into battery after about 100 rounds. After I shot it for a while the problem cleared up. It has been prefectly reliable for thousands of rounds now.

If your problem with the P40 is just that the slide doesn't go all the way into battery, I'd say make sure it is lubbed, you are keeping a firm grip on it, and shoot a couple of hundred rounds through it. It should be fine once it is broken in.

Thanks! This is also my first *new* gun and I wasn't familiar with the breakin process and whether problems were common or rare. I'll go through a few hundred more rounds before I get worried and I'll keep it lubed. When there's not a round in the gun the slide pops back into place pretty hard... it only does it when there's a round in the chamber (or going INTO the chamber).

Kahr recommends a minimum 200-round break-in period before the weapon is considered ready for defensive carry. They even go so far as to state this in almost the same words in their owner's manuals. I would imagine that the issue will go away by then, and if not, see if different ammo takes care of it. It's possible that your gun just doesn't like the Wally World Winchester ammo (which would be a shame considering the cheap cost of that stuff).

BTW, I noticed that you said it does it if there's a round in the chamber - you might already be aware of this, but don't drop the slide on a loaded chamber. The extractor is designed to have the case rim slide up under it as from the magazine, not to pop around the rim.

I've been really happy with my Kahrs. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip. I mean when it loads the chamber itself, as in via the recoil from the last round fired. I'm probably not making much sense, so just ignore what I just said if so ;) I'll just run another 150 or so rounds in it, 200 total before I freak out.

Well, I put another 50 rounds through it last night. It done the same thing on the first mag but after there it worked flawlessly. Guess it really did just need to be broken in. Or I'm speaking too soon, hope not.
