I'm taking a holster course next month and have a 1911c that I rather like, and wonder what's a good starter holster?
I've been searching and understand that it should be OWB, have no retention devices, and point the barrel slightly towards the firing line.
I also understand that the first holster will not be the last, so I'm not looking for the be-all and end-all, just a starter holster to get my bearings and learn what I like and don't.

As an IPSC RO ...
I suggest you begin with a normal, kydex or plastic OWB. If you want to save a lot of money, try a Fobus (plastic) OWB ... same low low cost as Uncle Mike but Fobus has a softer feel to it. Expect to get what you pay for.
If you want buy the right holster the first time, buy a good quality kydex OWB holster from BearClaw Holster http://www.bearclawholsters.com or Dan Hillsman http://www.hillsmanholster.com
Both of those guys also make IPSC style holsters, Dan's is called the "Range Master" and BearClaw has something a little more streamlined called the "Race 1". ... BUT for just starting out, I'd begin with a normal OWB as that will have it's own utility far beyond IPSC / IDPA use.
IPSC is the crack cocaine of shooting sports - you'll really love it.
