Odd Second Pistol selection

ok, i know you dont want to hear it but you clicked. i'll try to keep it short.

My first pistol was a Ruger Single Six stainless. i love it. i need more.

my options are basically thus:

Cap and Ball Revolver: 1860 Navy, or something like that, maybe 1862 police, etc. 44 cal. i have an itch and they're cheap.

38 Snub. probly Taurus, because its cheap(cheaper than 357 and other brands but will shop used). something to Maybe CCW, but i always HATE snubs. I'd probly be happier if it was a 4" but they seem less common.


1911, Springfield, GI, green. want one, just might have to wait.

see, kinda odd huh? if i go 1911 its at the highest end of my budget so i'd also shop around for similarly priced autos.

My budget it about $250, which will get me the C&B and supplies, but the other two are stretching it just a hair.

Get whatever tickles your fancy, but unless you are just dead set against .357 and don't like the caliber or something, I would go .357 rather than .38 for a wheel gun. Then you can shoot whichever you want. As far as the other guns, I say go for it.

get the .357 and shoot .38 through it until you carry it. I'm not a revolver guy, but I think one can do that :confused:

if you can find one, the Firestorm (Llama under a different name) .45acp 1911 and be had for about $250 or less NIB and I love mine.Not 1 single hiccup in the 5 years I've owned it and I've fed it LOTS of all kinds of cheap ammo thru it with no problems.I also have a Llama MAX-1 (also a 1911) I inherited and it's been just as accurate and reliable, and can also be had for around $250 or less NIB.I now most people will say Llama's are crap but the 2 Ihave have been flawless, so I'm either just REALLY lucky, or they are much better than internet chat would lead you to beleive.just my opinion though, YMMV.

Buy an older Smith--there's plenty of 4" .38s and .357s out there. Heck, I've got one!

Unless you enjoy paying lots of good money for S&H on black powder, those cap-and-ball things aren't a "good deal". I've got one, and haven't ever used it, because I have yet to will up the money required to get some BP and lead.

I would prefer the 357 for power, but when shopping i noticed it was larger/heavier and more expensive. Of course to make it lighter and smaller the price went up quickly.

the BP supplies are available at the local Sportsmans warehouse. they even have a little BP pistol starter kit with "everything you need"

as far as i know i have never seen a Llama pistol. i've seen Llamas, they spit. The only bargain 1911's i've seen are Rock Islands and i've heard mixed reviews on them too, and they run at $400+.

well, i think i waited long enough and i dont want the cap and ball so much any more.

a friend just bought the Taurus 1911 and that thing is amazing! makes me really want one. but he has one so i can shoot it.

the 38/357 snub is really gaining ground too. i can get one local for under 250. what do ya'll think?

No way you're going to get a 1911 for that. A .38 snub is more possible, though you'll probably end up going used, and/or way off brand (Rossi, Armscor).

That's the only question I see in your post. My answer is "no, not that odd."

The cap and ball's going to be mostly a fun gun, the others more useful. With those wants, and that budget, I personally would be looking at the .38 snub nose. But that's me. You do what you want.

Umm, wait 'till next week? then your budget could be $350. Or wait another week, and then your budget could be $450. At that point, you could message me, and I'll sell you an SA Mil-Spec. :D

Or just do what you want. Although if you get a cap n ball, you can save a lot of hassle by getting a Ruger Old Army, or Remington pattern, rather than the army or navy colt style.

If you just need the pistol for fun, R&R, and geez-whiz factor, go with the Cap and Ball. Historical guns, even if new manufacture, are always cool. My wife (she carries) made fun of me because I got a Cabelas Traditional Hawken Black Powder 50 cal. She made fun until I put it together. Then she actually admitted that it was cool.

For $250, you'll get a used Taurus .38 or maybe .357 if you are lucky, of course depending where you live. In South Florida, gun prices are somewhat high so I would say save up a little more.
