Has anyone here ever heard of a brand of hunting/fishing/camping knives named "Puma" or "Puma IP"?

I hear that they are made in Germany. I've not heard anything about that brand and a friend is trying to sell me a small bowie shaped knife along with a deep bellied skinning knife. Both are NIB and coated in a layer of machine oil. They are also stag handled and have leather scabbards.

Puma are very well made knives. How much is your friend asking? I sold one I had on ebay for 175 a couple years ago. It wasn't NIB but was close.

There's two Pumas here,a White Hunter fixed blade bought in the 60s and given to my father and a 3" locking folder given me by a close friend. Both take a wicked edge and keep it.

Good design and workmanship, very good steel.

Fine quality, limited collectiblity and a few somewhat eccentric designs. Lots of stag that is probably beginning to yellow and show its age but stag does bring a premium in today's market. Used to advertise an indention from hardness testing on every blade and certainly showed fine quality control. Knives like the White Hunter are getting a premium in the market from people who like the design but my own choice is more toward the Loveless influence in American knives or at least knives made for the American market. I'd expect the skinner to be more in demand than the bowie if it simply a clip point but of course if it is a double edged tactical design then tactical brings a premium.

A good friend of mine has an older fixed blade Puma that is nasty sharp.

My father had a 90's production Puma lockback that would take and hold a scary edge as well. Of course my kid brother inherited it and promptly lost it...

They are good knives.

Puma is made in Germany and are excellent knives. The "White Hunter" is one of those legendary knives that anyone would be proud to own.

It doesn't look pretty but this is an extremely well made knife. Very sharp and extremely durable.

If any of y'all were to choose a Puma knife which could do double duty as a skinner and a self defense tool, which model would it be?

Wrong question. Skinners are pretty specialezed blade shapes. "Survival" (How I'm coming to hate that word as much as tactical) knives are generalized and do no one thing well. Also a "survival" knife has to be suited to the environment.

The closest thing you're going to find that fits your skinner/survival is a pukko or mora or a drop point hunter or clip point hunter with a slight upsweep.
