I love the smell of AR-15s in the morning

So I went to the range this morning to give my AR-15 a workout. The first few shots were from the bench with a light wind in my face.

Bang! A little flash, a little kick and a little smoke. Then the smell gets to my nose. That odor is very distinctive to me. It takes me back to Army Basic Training and my first encounter with the M16/AR-15 rifle.

So what causes the smell? Is it the primer and powder combination or the type of cleaning agents used or the type of lubrication used? Today I was using Winchester white box ammo in a gun that had been cleaned with CLP and lightly lubed with Miltec-1. But I've encountered the same smell using other combinations of ammo, cleaner, and lube.

Do other guns have a distinct odor?

I think it's inherant to the AR, with the gas tube blowing the bolt back you get some of that 50,000 psi gas to enjoy. I like it. All day long!!!!!!

Shoot some Wolf brand ammo and you'll get a distinctive odor all right!

Sorry gents, but nothing beats the smell of "green bag" 155mm powder on a foggy morning! You Arty guys know what I'm talking about! :D

Good Shooting
