I picked up a couple of 631s recently and I'm getting split cases about 5 per 100. What's the deal? It doesn't seem to be a chamber issue as it is random. I'm using Federal factory loads as well as some reloads and I can't find a pattern. Is this caliber known for that?

I have a Ruger SP-101 with 4" barrel and have never had this problem with factory or hand loads. I would have to think over sized chambers.

I have a 631 as well... never had a split, but never really shot it that much either.
But I did have some problems with .44 Spl splitting with mild loads of 5.3grns of 231. Remington brass was the villain in that melodrama. Starline brass to the rescue.
Starline Brass... highly recommended.

When I first bought my single six and a box of cartridges[Federal factory loads].I noticed after fireing a few rounds off .that I had cases split .Got a hold of Federal and they said that some had not been anealed properly. They asked me to send in the box and they paid for shipping and sent me 2 boxes of good cartridges back.So it sounds to me like You may have the same problem.Federal sure did right by me.Hope this helps.

I have had 3 revolvers in .32 mag, including S&Ws and a Ruger single six. I have had cases split lengthwise with the Federal ammo in all 3 guns. In fact at one point I complained to Federal, sent them a few of the split cases and they sent me 4 boxes of replacement ammo. The Federal brass seems to be a problem with this cartridge. On the other hand I have never had a problem with split cases when I use Starline brass.

There have been previous reports on The High Road concerning split cases when using Federal .32 H&R Magnum ammunition. Look at the box(s) the cartridges came in, write down the lot number, and contact Federal. I suspect they will replace the rounds you have.

Thanks guys! I'll call Federal and see what they say. As for the brass I've already got, I'm thinking I might aneal it and see what happens. I've also got an order in for some of that high-dollar Starline brass from Midway.
