This is a simple one.Why do some 1911's (like mine) have the cutout at the rear of the ejection port on the top of the slide nearest to the rear sight? I know youve seen it.On some guns,the port goes straight across and others have the cutout.Im assuming that its for enhanced ejection but maybe its to enable the johnson rod to work properly? I cant find a good photo,and my digital camera has no macro mode.:(

If I understand you correctly, that is supposed to give the firer a chance to see if the chamber is loaded. Springers do this, I have heard.

Howdy TZ,

if you're talking about the small"U" shaped notch at the back
of the barrel hood, that's a loaded chamber visual notch. You
can see the case rim in it.

If you mean the bullet-shaped cutout on the side of the slide,
that's the rollover notch. It allowed the ejected round to
roll out and toward the back of the shooter. It was first used in
National match shoots to keep your brass from beaning the guy
in the station to your immediate right.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, it's not what the other guys said. It's kind of a protrusion of the slide itself, and it kind of "frames" the top left part of the port if you're looking at the side.

Mind you, I have no idea why it's there.

AHH! Got it.

That's the cutout for the barrel hood. All 1911's have it. If
it were cut straight across, the extractor would be flappin'
in the breeze.

If you look at an actual US military pistol, you'll see that the ejection port is a LOT smaller than the ones on most of the current crop of new production 1911-type pistols. But as Tuner and Schmackey said, the port is not symmetrical. It has a longer cutout on the top of the slide and the barrel has a matching projection that sticks back into the recess.

WHY it is there I am only guessing but I would say the little tab on the barrel is to control the headspace - the amount of room the cartridge has to fit into and still not have a lot of back and forth play. Hope this helps.

In this picture you can clearly see this cutout at the rear of the ejection port on the TOP of the slide.Some 1911's go straight across the top of the slide from the rear of the ejection port on the SIDE of the slide.

Tropical may be talking about the releif cut in the slide to keep from denting the brass.

All i know is ive seen 1911's that have the cut and some that dont.:confused:
