I will be picking up my first AR15 rifle next week and wanted to know if dryfiring it will damage the firing pin? Any advise is appreciated!

I don't know how different an AR15 and an M16A2 actually are, but in the Marine Corps you dry fire your rifle thousands of times when you're snapping in (dry firing the rifle in various shooting positions checking your trigger control and getting used to the positions).

inspection arms (army) involves dry firing the weapon. Its also practiced in the basic rifle marksmanship training.

It's your rifle.

Yes, it's okay to dryfire.

The military dryfires M-16A2s more than enough- function testing after reassembly, trigger squeeze training, teaching how to operate....

The rifles seem to survive.

Yup, don't worry about dry firing the AR-15...

And, on top of everything else, firing pins are cheap and plentiful...

Most AR15 parts are easy and quick to replace and widely available and affordable even in the rare event the firing pin does break.

It's okay to dry fire center-fire weapons but not rimfire.

Perfectly OK to dryfire assembled; but if you dryfire the lower when it is separated from the upper, the hammer slams into the body of the lower and there have been reports of cracks from doing this.
