I'd take the kel-tec only because the Smith doesn't have a hammer.

I'd take the .38 anyday over the .380. Speer Gold Dot +P short barrel loads, thankyouverymuch!

would ya still take the 38 snub if the other choice had been a pf9 knowing that it won't shoot +p therefore about equal ballistics? My question is more traditional-traditional or new-new.IE.I'm pretty sure the old guy with the model 10 on his hip will want a 36 for backup.

I can't vote either way. I have Gock, 1911's and 642/442's I use them all for HD.

personally, I have a hard time hitting the broad side of a barn with the little mini autos, and somehow always find a way to pinch my hand in the slide. I can shoot a snubby revolver fairly well, and especially with a concealed hammer there is nothing near your hand to pinch. I would think the criteria would be to determine the smallest gun you can comfortably handle, and the largest gun that can be comfortably concealed and carried, then decide on something in that range with the ballistics/reliability/brand that you like.

My Glock 17 is my first line of HD. I keep my P3AT in the bed-side table as a backup.

4 lines of defense:

Primary carry and primary back-up:
Colt 1911A1 & Glock 17...or...Glock 19C (usually 19C)

Pocket and/or Ankle:
KelTec P3AT...and...NAA Mini-revolver

To clarify, this is what I frequently carry, and perhaps my favorite combination:
Primary: Colt 1911A1 Series 70 reissue, .45 ACP (w/10-round mags)
Back-up: Glock 19C (w/17-round mags)
Ankle: KelTek P3AT
Pocket: NAA .22Mag.
Holy Bible :)

I've seen a Kel-Tec group about 1.5 inches between 8 and 15 yards.

Not bad for a plastic fantastic $199 gun.

And I like the ergos of 1911s, glocks don't do it for me.
