You know my answer: CRKT M16! My wife has the spearpoint and it's a great knife. I carry two M16-04Z 4" tanto blade "Big Dogs" myself.

Today I just bought a CRKT M16-12Z (http://www.crkt.com/m16zytel.html) for one of my groomsmen in my upcoming wedding. I got it for 28.97 on sale at my local gun shop. Man this is a really sweet knife. Simple, inexpensive and it seems really tough. I'm envious of the knife I bought for someone else now and am ready to trade in my SOG Pentagon Elite (http://www.sogknives.com/pentagon.htm)for this baby!!

Blackout. The Speedsafe mechanism is great. Once you use a folder with it... you wont use anything else.
The SOG Flash is a nice little knife. But the handle is much better than the blade. Seems SOG made the blade as an after thought. The Blackout might not be as "cool" but the blade configuration is much more useable in everyday use.
I've handled both.... Even owned the Blackout. Between the two - the Blackout wins hands down.

The adolescent asks, no moral stuff...
Consider the advice in general and draw the best conclusions. What will it profit if you lie in a pool of your own blood and realize you prematurely drew the wrong conclusions from a bunch of internet advisees,?
If you want to carry illegally, I'd recommend an auto from Oregon.

That was constructive, Gordy. Thanks a lot.
There are a lot of people here at THR, who's opinions I value a great deal and would confidently take advice and not fear for laying in a pool of my own blood.
If you want to carry illegally... Yeah... there is some great advice.
Pentagon Elite for a CRKT? I'd rather have the Elite. Or is it the Elite II? Ones bigger than the other... I forget which. Either way... The SOG is the better knife. The CRKTs... I've had a couple of them, tempted by the good looks. However the heat treatment of the blades is pathetic. The last one I owned had edge retention just slightly better than model clay.

I've had no problems with my CRKT M-16 It did a fine job on the tasks I set it to and for the price I paid, It was excellent. I ended up giving it to the son of a very good friend as his 1st knife. A year later and he hasn't lost it. I'm impressed;)

Goerge, you forgot the good suggestion to "Consider the advice in general and draw the best conclusions." If you want to separate this out to simply the pick of the best knife I'll go with your suggestions.
But, if one considers the self revelatory comments of the youth and the tone of his querry these can be found to be sufficient ground upon which to comment. He is under the age of 18 and hoped to have his brother purchase the knife for him to carry with out his parents knowlege. Is this not illegal in California?
Flags go up for me perhaps quicker than you because I used to be a clinical social worker with youth. Any young fellow who thinks he can negotiate the next confrontation better with a knife needs some talking to.

Gordy, with that line I meant that all discussion whether or not I should actually get a knife should take place in the other thread. Not that it shouldn't exist. But this thread is purely about which knife, not about how purchasing one resembles acquiring farm skills.
Number two, I am talking with my parents about it.
And if the next confrontation is anything like the last, then there would be no point in drawing a knife. I would just give them the money like last time.
So please guys, if you have something to say about whether or not I should get a knife, move it to the other thread.

Thanks for sharing. That makes me less inclined to go buy one for myself. :) I've been very happy with the Elite though...the CRKT is just something new. The Elite II is the bigger one. Elite has 4"blade. Elite II has 5" (I think).

Hmmmmm.....so the right to defend oneself has an age limit? Humor me for a moment. Suppose a teen was in the backseat of a car, abducted, and stabbed the kidnapper in the neck at a stoplight. Would the Legal & Political forum would be abuzz with everyone lauding the youth's pluck and determination? Would a youth with a knife who defends himself be moral to do so? Or would the youth be morally superior if found jigsaw puzzle style in a Hefty Steelsack by a freeway offramp?

Looks like this situation has been resolved. The choice has been made. It's the Blackout for me.
Check the other one for details.
