Shipping a pistol

Hey ya'll..sorry if this has been asked before, I checked the forum and didn't see it here, but if it's deleted or moved I understand.

I have a MK III (Ruger) I'm trying to sell, and an acquaintance has expressed an interest in it. Now, I know that I'll have to go through either FedEx or UPS, which is fine. I've been told that I will have to actually ship the gun from a hub location, which is fine as well. My question is, do I need to have a copy of the recieving FFL's license with me when I go to ship it out, or do I just keep that for my own records? Also, am I to assume that when the FFL sends me a copy of his license to be able to ship the gun, that counts as "notifying" him of the shipment, or do I have to call/email him a seperate time? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I want to keep on the right side of things with this.

Anyone with experience care to lend some advice?

Thanks in advance!

No, you don't have to goto a "hub". You have to goto an actual FedEx/UPS location, not a FedEx Kinkos or a little brown box store. You must notify the service agent it is a firearm and no ammunition is included in the shipment.

They will want either you to be a FFL or the recipient a FFL, they will not know either way actually. They will ask. You will have to ship overnight with a direct signature option and adult signature, Expect to pay 45 to 60 shemolions. O yeah don't mark any obvious hints as to whats in the box.

As I understand it, the thing the folks who originally explained it to me referred to a "hub" as an actual FedEx or UPS location. I only know of one location around here that isn't a FedEx/Kinko's or a Brown Box store, so I guess that's what counts as an actual location/hub.

I'm aware of the obligation to notify them as to the contents, and to not ship ammo with the pistol, and since it's only a .22 shipping ammo with the pistol would kinda be pointless anyhow, heh.

I'm not quite clear on something you said, perhaps you could clarify it for me. -

They will want either you to be a FFL or the recipient a FFL, they will not know either way actually. They will ask.

So, they will want me to either be a licensed dealer, or the recipient of a shipment? Or by "the recipient of a ffl" do you mean the recipient of the copy of the FFL's license who I'm shipping to? I think I get what you're trying to say, it's just worded a little wierd and it's throwing me off. :o

I know it's gonna cost a fair bit to ship it out, and I'm definetly going to make sure it's sent signature required. Other than that, I think I have it down.

Thanks for the reply, I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding anything.

You can ship the pistol as a private individual as part of the transaction but it must go to an FFL holder and the outlet you ship it from, needs to see the copy of the FFL when you bring the pistol in. You do not need to be an FFL licensed dealer to ship a firearm.

I've sold guns via gunbroker and my FedEx location usually keeps or makes a copy of the FFL for their records.

A side note. If you're sending a pistol to say Smith & Wesson for repair, you do not need a copy of their FFL since they're a major company and it is not required when sending in a gun for repair.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

You do not need to be an FFL licensed dealer to ship a firearm.
One caveat. While this is correct, some receiving FFLs will refuse shipments unless they are from another FFL. (It's their option.) Make sure the FFL you are shipping to will take the shipment.

Like deadin posted, talk to the receiving FFL first.

Thanks for the clarification ya'll, I think I pretty much got it now, heh. I'm going to be shopping the pistol around to a few shops here first, but if that's no good then I will need to ship it to the original person.

Your assistance has been appreciated!

Basically cdrt clarified. The agent will or should ask if one of you are a FFL. What ever is the truth tell them  but they will not know either way.

If you look at a fedex package and at the package it will have a 4 digit identifier. MEMH is the main FedEx hub OAKH is another The H stands for a "hub". If you see something like SEGA, the A stands for a "station". If you see something like SEAR, the R stand for a "airport ramp". When your friend told you to take it to a hub he was right but also wrong since a hub may be many miles away. A normal station or a ramp will also suffice;)

That would never have occurred to me. Thanks for the explanation. :)

"not a FedEx Kinkos"

Not true. Real FedEx employees work at FedEx Kinkos and they will take a handgun for shipment. If they are not sure what they are doing, they will even open the package in your presence, after you tell them it is a handgun, see the handgun, close it up and seal it for you and then ask if you want to ship it ground or air :what:. The Fedex regs say handguns only go by air, but I chose the ground option offered to me and saved $45.00!

The last time I shipped a handgun, I ended up having to contact the ATF as everyone I talked to told me something different. Our local UPS store told me that I could ship 2nd day air early AM, while an FFL I was going to have ship it for me, told me that it could only be send next day per ATF regs. Well, ATF guy said that it was up to the courier as long as I SENT to FFL. So I only spent 25 bucks on shipping and I don't give business to that FFL anymore. Well, he lies all the time anyway. But I dunno if UPS changed their policy or not.

That's kinda the situation I'm in, and it's frustrating as hell. I know NavyLt said in his comment that I can take it to a regular store, but maybe he's in a more allowing state than I am because I know for a fact that I can't do that here. I'm just going to hold onto the pistol for now..it's becoming more of a hassle than it's worth to ship it.

I cannot WAIT to settle down in a reasonable state. My kingdom for the ability to conduct FTF sales!
