870 Feeding Problems

Hi fellas, I'm new to the forum and all the info on here is great. You guys know you're stuff and theres no bs. Well, I bought an ex-police 870 wingmaster about 6 months ago. I have thoroughly cleaned and lubricated necessary components according to factory manual. Every time I shoot it, it fails to feed 1/15 rounds. It extracts just fine, but when I push the pump forward to load the next round, it sometimes gets stuck. It requires pulling the pump back and then it will load fine. I am using plenty of force with my pumping action. After reading a lot of posts on here and I keep hearing one thing. This gun doesn't jam. Does anyone know why mine might be? Worn parts perhaps? I have no idea how many rounds have been through this gun. Thanks,
-Tim

Most times hard to determine via this method, but lets try anyway.
The first thing that popped into my mind as you discribed the problem was the carrier mechanics. Possibly a bent shell carrier ? Or the carrier dog , or bolt slide ?
As the forward stroke starts, the carrier dog locks into the slot in the bolt slide to bring the carrier upward. It is a shot in the dark, but check this system for operation. Take careful note at the exact point that the hang-up is occuring to see what parts are coming into play at that point.
Another possible area to look at is the action of the shell stops or interuptors as they mate with the slide bar ramps to cam them in or out. Damage on either the stop or the slide bar can sometimes allow the two parts to meet head on rather than properly gliding into each other at the ramp point.

I managed to jam the gun with some dry cycles. It doesn't seem to jam nearly as much when cold. I have taken a few photos of the jam (see link above). It would appear that the shell is being loaded slightly towards the outside of the chamber on the ejection side. I am guessing it some type of problem with the shell carrier/guides. Should I bring this to a gunsmith or can I replace or re-align these parts myself? Thanks again.

Well, I took the gun apart to clean it and examined the shell carrier closely. It would appear that the tab on the ejection side was bent slightly towards the direction that the shell is getting caught on. I decided to put it in a vise and straighten it. After cleaning and assy, I have dry cycled 50 rnds and no jams yet. I will take her to the range sometime this week and let you guys know if it changes after there is some heat in it. Thanks,
-Tim

Hi !
Sorry it took this long to get back to you. I viewed the photo's and it does in fact look like the round is hanging up on the right side of the chamber. Adjusting the carrier would, and should, take care of it. If not just the tab, the whole front of the carrier may be sprung a little and could be tweaked back to the left.
Sounds like you got her fixed - good luck and do let us know.

I had a friend whose 2 870s were jamming bad. Turns out to be the ammo. THe cheap Winchester from Walmart did it. Once he used better ammo (I traded him my Remington b/c I was using an over/under) the problems went away.

Well I just put 100 rnds through and had 1 jam. Although my friend was watching and said I did not pump the action all the way. I think my fix has worked. I'll let you know if anything goes wrong. Thanks,

I agree with mnrivrat, that the carrier is the culprit. I had the same problem with a used 870 I bought just 'cause the price was right. Also tried tweaking the carrier, bit it seems like it isn't a permanent fix. Get yourself a new carrier from any of the gun parts outfits and make sure the pivot is tight when you put it in. That should fix the problem.

Adjust the carrier.. Call Remingotn, they will explain.
