Anyone know who makes a quality piece? I'm thinking of picking up a Lightweight Sporter especially since C Products is making progress on new mags.

DPMS makes them. They make them in both 16" and 20" also. Most 7.62x39 ARs seem to be 16" carbines for some reason.

since C Products is making progress on new magsThey are?

They are?

Now that they've finished up the 9mm AR mags they said that they're working on it.

The last word I got, on Monday, was that the C Products 7.62x39 AR mags are anticipated to become available in October.

The rifle length gas system doesn't work reliably with the 7.62x39's pressure/expansion curve.

In hunting around just tonight I noticed that Model 1 Sales offers an AR 7.62x39 upper with an 11.5" barrel.

Buy an AK for this caliber. Its cheaper and much more reliable than an AR upper.
