22 Mag conversion

I've a spare cylinder for my S&W model 17-4 in 22LR and was thinking,could it be reamed out to 22mag for use as a conversion?Has anyone done this?Good idea or not and why.Thanks,

This comes up a lot. It is not a good idea to try to convert your Model 17 because the bore diameter for the .22 magnum is about .002 inches larger than the bore of a .22 LR. You will run into significantly higher pressures, and accuracy will probably suffer. Convertible guns are still made by Ruger, but they have the larger bore size. They typically shoot the magnums better than the LR's.
