AR-15 Vote for me... but I definitely do not have a "sophisticated opinionated" pallet for service rifles.

Choose for what?

An '03 nicely sporterized in the 50's would be my favorite for lookin' on and playing with, followed closely by the M1 and AR. The others.. enh. :)

I am a lefty, so that leaves out the bolt rifles, and the ergonomics of the AR15 are truly terrible, the worst of the group, so that leaves the Garand by default. I also happen to really like the Garand and its family and descendants. But then, I, too, have to ask, for what purpose? There is MUCH difference between the .30-06 and the .223/5.56; we are talking apples versus grapes. The AR15 is also in a totally different category of weapon from the bolt rifles, regardless of the cartridge. The Garand is able to perform as a true main battle rifle, and still function as a rapid-fire weapon when shooting-and-moving or shooting-while-moving at close range. Notice I did not use the "a-word" or the even more abhorrent "t-word" here. Given the right task, I might even hold my nose and choose the AR15, but if we are dealing with wide-open possibilities, give me a Garand.

Rexster my man, you should really try the old Enfield No.4 before passing judgement on it. Shooting left handed ( on purpose because we are all right handed ) a group of us Enfield nuts were able to sustain a 15 round per minute rate of aimed fire. The target was a white 5 gallon bucket @ about 400 yards. Said target was thoroughly dispatched. We did it just to see if we could and came away from the experience convinced that we were all the proud owners of the finest bolt action battle rifle ever built. BTW - reloads were also performed left handed.

coelacanth, I agree that the SMLE is not bad at all as a lefty rifle. I will probably get one for myself sooner or later. :)

There are rifles and then there are icons, for me the M1 is at the top of the list.

The SMLE and AR are both also a blast to shoot, but IMO while not on the list a nice M-14 pattern rifle is probably the most versatile and the mighty mosin is probably the best bang for your buck in mil-surpery

For an adition to the collection and range duty, either an M1903, or an M1, with a slight favor towards the'03. They're getting pricey.

From an availabilty standpoint, the M1917 was produced in the fewest numbers of the rifles you listed and with a large number being sporterized over the years it will be the most difficult to find in decent shape (assuming you are looking for military configuration). They are excellent shooters and thier popularity as a collectable has increased tremendously in the past few years with the prices going nowhere but up. If you plan on gettting all of the rifles on your list at one time or another, I'd highly recommend finding the 1917 first.

Depends upon the purpose.

I own all of them ... for SHTF, I prefer the AK47 w/ 40 round mags. For fun to shoot, I'd go with the M1 Garand. My 1903 is the most accurate rifle I own, period. (and I've got a "few", trust me ;) )

Lock and load,

I'll mostly get them just to shoot them and to say I have them, I might take them hunting once or twice.

For a defensive tactical rifle I would go with an AR.

For piece of history that is fun to shoot I would go with the Garand.
