Any comments about the Rem. 710?

I am thinking of getting this rifle. I have looked at and held, looked through, etc. the rifle and I like it. It is chambered in 30-06 and sells for around $370 or so (with scope) at Wally-World:eek:  .

Is this a good rifle? I have shot an 06 before, and like it. If I get it, is there a particular breaking in style I should use? (I am new to rifles, at least new rifles.

Thanks,

There are not words to describe the cheap parts and lack of quality of this particular Remington product. I'd rather do all my rifle shooting with a Nagant! A better budget 30-06 would be a Savage, or if you want a Remington product, Model 700 ADL Synthetics can be had for $360 or so. Even better are Ruger 77 or CZ 550 American. These all cost more than the 710 but the extra $ is money well spent. Disregard the scope on the 710 (or Savage) as it is of worse quality than the rifle. If you have any interest in dealer prices on any rifles, I'll be glad to look them up for you.

David has some good advice, not to mention a great name

The 710 is possibly the cheapest rifle you can get, not just in terms of money but also in quality. Savage makes a nicer gun for about the same price, but if I were you I'd spend the extra few bucks and get a Ruger M77 or Winchester Model 70. Sure, they don't come with scopes, but the scope that comes with the 710 isn't that great anyway...

I am not a fan of remington rifles. They make good shotguns, but I am not impressed with their rifles...

I am new to rifles for my self, but have shot other rifles before. I just want something fun to shoot, with some power. I would like to be able to take it hunting as well. The 710 seems to be ok for that, and the 3-9x40 Bushnell seems quite nice for the package. I really dont need a gun that can pick off hoardes of gun-stealing liberals at 1000yds, when 400 is enough:D (Just kidding, lets get that out of the way now.)

If I had wanted expensive, I would get a 700 titanium in 308, custom form fitting stock, Leupold 8.5-25x50 scope, free-floating barrel, shooting tables for my custom gun out to 1000 documented yards, and all kinds of other goodies. If I had wanted that, I wouldnt have a car or the computer I am typing at.

I did ask for opinions, but felt kind of berated by the comments recieved for my choice in rifle. I apologize if the above came accross as a rant or flame.

Please continue with any opinions any of you have.

Mike,

Didn't mean to sound mean, but I consider people here friends I haven't met. You being a friend, I'll tell you what I'd tell any of my friends. If you have decided on the 710, then by all means good luck! Don't look for anyone with much experience in rifles to affirm your great choice. If you looking for the best you can do for the money, let me know. I'll give you the price that dealers pay, and let you know how to make a great buy on a better gun. No hard feeling on my end. If you decide to buy a better rifle, I may have a decent scope not doing anything.

You've come here seeking information it seems...

so take what you hear and listen to it.

The Remington 710 is crap. dont waste your money.

Remington 7's and 700's are generally good. you can do a LOT more with a 700 down the road if you want to.

Savage rifles are accurate, well made rifles, although i prefer Remingtons.

CZ's are very nice rifles. About the same price range as well (basic models) maybe a little higher.

If I had wanted expensive

Savages arent expensive by any means, but are WAY higher quality than a Remingon 710.

Even a 700 ADL in 30-06 can be had from Walmart for under $400.

buy a higher quality rifle or you will regret it. its something you will probably keep for a while, whats an extra $40 at the begining if it will last your whole life?

same goes for scopes.

Last of all, why a 30-06? if you just want something to plink with and hunt with on occasion, why not a 308?

I bought a 700 ADL from Wally in .30-06 it was the same price as the 710 in the case right next to it.

The 700 has a forged steel reciever and a threaded barrel, and there are lots of aftermarket upgrades.

The 710 has a sheatmetal tube with nylon bushings, mounted in the plastic reviever stock, the barrel is pressfitted and not designed to be upgradable.

The 700 is a good solid rifle, the 710 is like a bic lighter and can be tossed out.

Ask Wally to check the BOOK and see if they have a 700ADL in the back it is probably not on display, find someone there who knows, the person at the counter may not know what they have in the back and may not want to check, INSIST on a manager in that case.

You will be better off with the 700 and it will cost the same money, you will have to lose the $10 scope on the 710 when it breaks anyway and it will, if it even works at all.

Dude,

Stay away from a 710 it is a total piece of crap. It's the Ford Pinto of rifles. If you get one you'll be sorry even for just a play around rifle. If thats all you want go get some bullet proof Military rifle like one of those sporterized 03's you see on the rack for like $200.00.

I don't care for any modern Remington rifles but the 710 has brought cheesy and cheap to a new level.

You can take the same money and get a good used Rem. 700, Savage, Ruger,or a Howa 1500. The Scope sells at Walmart for $39.95 if you want one.
The 710 is just "Sucker Bait". A "cheap" rifle that Remington won't be selling 5 years from now.

You'd also be better off buying a good used Marlin 336 in .30/30 (About $200.00, and spend the other 200.00 (after tax) on a better quality scope.

Jeeze, you'd think no one likes the 710...:p

It fills a niche.

Wouldn't have one, myself, but I like good rifles.:neener:

Good advice. I used to work for a local department store in the sporting goods department. Half of our firearms were not on display, and I suspect that most places are like that. It never hurts to ask if you don't see what you are looking for.

Also, keep in mind that alot of the people who work in the sporting goods are not "gun people". At the place I worked, I was one of 3 people who delt with guns, and the other two were not "gun people". One guy kept saying "30mm" instead of ".30 caliber"...

IMO the Remington 710 is a fine rifle if you like pressed in barrels and cheesey plastic action inserts that the bolt rides on :barf: . If lorcin , raven and other zinc alloy pistols are considered saturday night specials then this rifle is the first long gun that could be considered one too IMO.

If it were my money (and I did do this) I'd get a 700 and a nicer scope. My current play and hunting rifle is a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .260 Remington topped off with a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33mm scope. (Awesome combo IMO, but I'm always looking at really, REALLY nice top dollar scopes!)

The 710 is a good, serviceable rifle, IF you are a hunter and IF you only put a box or two of rounds through it a season. Otherwise, get something nicer. You'll be happier. The 710 is one of only 2 rifles I've ever held that made me grit my teeth and wince in sorrow (the other being a Ruger 77 International that had been checkered with a dull cutter). Plus, the bolt does not glide, the stock is flimsy, and the whole unit just feels inexpensive.

Good luck on your choice either way it goes.

I'd have to agree with what's been said so far.I'd buy a 710 if it was for a low low price, but if it's priced the same as guns that have been around and proven to be worthy I'd have to pass.

They need to **** can the 710 and bring back the 788.

I think I could probably get about a dozen if not more people to agree with me....

hello again moparmike,
Ozark Armory in springdale (building with a red roof and GUNS spelled out on it) would be a good place to check out for centerfire rifles. They wont steer you wrong, and should you decide to go with a surplus gun they have those, too.
I would imagine they would have a great selection to look at. Tell em the robert the knife guy sent you. (Nope, i dont get any kick backs, but we send a little buisness each others way)

"If I had wanted expensive, I would get a 700 titanium in 308, custom form fitting stock"

Why bother asking questions, if you have all the answers? If you don't understand that there's a vast spread between a titanium rifle and a Remmy ADL, then you probably aren't cogent enough to own a rifle.
