California Department of Justice
CRIME in 2002, January through December: Facts at a Glance

Violent crime rate - down 0.1 percent.

The VIOLENT CRIME category includes the offenses of homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. From 2001 to 2002, the number of violent crimes decreased 0.1 percent. The decrease in this category can be attributed to a decrease in reported aggravated assaults from 2001 to 2002.

The numbers break down as follows:

HOMICIDE - The willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. Homicide includes murder and nonnegligent manslaughter. The number of homicides reported for 2002 increased 10.8 percent from 2001. This offense experienced the largest percent change in number from 2001 to 2002.

FORCIBLE RAPE - The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Assaults or attempts to commit rape by force or
threat of force are included. The number of forcible rapes reported for 2002 increased 2.9 percent from 2001.

ROBBERY - The taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat
of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear. The number of robberies reported for 2002 increased 3.7 percent from 2001.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT - The unlawful attack or attempted attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. The number of aggravated assaults reported for 2002 decreased 2.3 percent from 2001. This is the only CCI offense to have experienced a decrease from 2001 to 2002."

Aggravated assault: -2.3%
Homicide: +10.8%
Rape: +2.9%
Robbery: +3.7%
Total: -0.1%

Either the number of aggravated assaults is much bigger than all the other categories or they invented a "Harsh Look" category and decided it was down 30% last year. I may have to go to fbi.gov and look up the actual numbers on those.

Yeah, some pretty Kalifonicated math there. Also,FORCIBLE RAPE - The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.So under Kalifornya law it is not possible to rape a male?

How does that work out per capita? Has CA population stayed constant?

I understand that they are talking about per-capita rates - not amount of crime.

I see. So if everyone keeps moving out of CA, pretty soon there will be one poor family who will get robbed, raped and stabbed every few hours.

Reductio ad absurdum.

Okay, I checked the numbers off the fbi.gov site.
They have a listing for national two-year trends. They are as follows:
Violent Crime: -1.4%
Murder:+0.8%
Assault: -2.0%
Rape: +4.0%
Robbery: -1.2%
Burglary: +1.5%
Overall national violent crime rate trend: -1.4%

So, Kali did a smidge better on aggravated assaults and better on rapes than average but stank up on murder, robbery, and overall violent crime rate.

...or they invented a "Harsh Look" category and decided it was down 30% last year...

Please stop giving those socialist fools ideas!
