Is cleaning your guns tiresome?

Cleaning my 9mm this morning really was tedious as usual. Almost an hour and a half for that sucker! Of course I clean every square milimeter of it as it's a carry gun, how about for non-carry guns, do you guys pay as much attention to them? I know I don't....the .22 rifle for instance, that thing gets about a ten minutes cleaning at most if I even decide to clean it.

I clean my carry gun well after I shoot it. My others I dont clean very well. I really found that after a certain point it becomes useless, I also make sure to pop a few rounds through my carry gun after I clean it so that I know I put everything back together correctly.
My USPSA gun only gets cleaned after every 2-3K rounds. Slide glide is the best lube ever.

Nope, it's relaxing. Kick back, TV or stereo going, nice cold drink, smell of Hoppe's throughout the house, rags covered in gunpowder soot......almost Heaven. :)

I used to clean all my guns every time I shot them but now I wait until they need it. My carry/defense guns get cleaned after each shooting. I also wait until I have several guns to carry so I can do them all in one shot. It takes almost as much time to clean one gun as it takes to clean several.

I'm fanatical about cleaning them.
I wear Hoppes, Militec1, and CLP as cologne. Love that smell. . .

What handgun on earth are you shooting that requires 90 minutes to clean?
I can detail strip a 1911 in under ten minutes, scrub and wipe everything in about five, and then reassemble in another ten minutes. A field strip and barrel clean takes about ten minutes total.
Maybe it is because I can use spray on brake cleaner for those tough spaces?
For the self-admitted lazies, just get some sort of "Dunk-it" kit.

i dont mind cleaning them. its therapeutic, and i watch tv while i clean. i did spend about 2 hours trying to get the barrel of my kimber to come completely clean. finally the patches were coming through clean when i was done.
i bought a shooter glass, you know, like a really tall shot glass? held about 2 oz, and it could have been a little bit wider so i could dunk each end of the barrel in, but it worked okay. soaked the barrel in there with hoppes for over an hour, every 10-15 minutes i would run a brush through.

Not as tiresome as shooting 500 rounds of hi-velocity 40 cal. ammo without a break.;)

But, an hour and a half? Seems excessive to me but, different strokes................! My guns end up quite clean, have always functioned, so I think twenty minutes is enough for me. Good shooting;)

I spend on the average 30 minutes to clean a pistol and 20 minutes for a revolver and they are spotless when I am done. As far as drudgery is concerned I've learned to take only 3 or 4 guns at a time shooting so I'm not faced with countless hours of cleaning afterwards. I'm kind of fanatical about cleaning them as soon as I get home and I have do it on the back porch, so the temperature has alot to do with my enjoyment of cleaning them. I actually find it more enjoyable today to clean a gun than when I first started shooting.

I consider it a God Given Right, a privilege, and a pleasure to own them and to care for them.
Along with these things come responsibilities
I only clean them when I'm in the mood to do it right.
I use that time to relax.
They are my hobby as well as one of my means of self defense.

Takes maybe 20 minutes for a 1911, little less for HK USP or Glock and then do a thorough cleaning every 1000 or so rounds. Never had any problem with FTF or FTE

I clean the crap out of my Beretta every time. I take my time on my long guns (wolf ammo in my SKS :D ). I spread them out on the kitchen table and clean them while watching a gun related DVD.

....until it dawned on me that if I lived in one of many countries on this planet, gun cleaning would be an unknown act.
It is clear that gun cleaning is part of gun ownership. And therefore a priveledge and a right.
I love to clean my guns.

I love cleaning my guns! Making them all nice and shiny is a real pleasure.

My USP takes about a half hour to clean and my 1911 about 45 minutes.

If it's tedious, you're doing something wrong.
Carry pieces get cleaned, and then function tested by shooting before they get put back into the carry rotation.

I just crank up the parts washer filled with Ed's Red, scrub away... use air compressor to "dry" and lubricate it for another day of shooting... takes maybe 5 minutes for a thorough cleaning....
Never let the sun set on a dirty gun...

After every range session (100 to 200 rounds) mine gets a boresnake ran trough it once or twice, then I pull the slide off and wipe the rails down, last it gets oiled and reassembled. Takes me 2 or 3 minutes. In case youre wonding I do actually clean them really well, occasionaly...

I don't like to clean much of anything, but I never put my guns away dirty. Do you guys find that Hoppes takes the finish off the barrel or slide?

Man, my friends think I am Nazi like in my gun cleaning regimen and I frequently clean theirs from time to time but I don't think I have ever taken more than say 20 minutes to clean one piece, unless you count cosmolene encrusted 70 year old C&R pieces.
Your guns must be museum quality clean.

and clean like a fool...
Tedium has nothing to do with it.
I spend a goodly amount of time cleaning... music on, garage door up, sun streaming in... Zen? Probably...
I recall how much money is invested in these "tools" and maintain them accordingly......

I enjoy cleaning my guns so much that I'll volunteer to clean yours also. Just send them my way. Turnaround time should be around 3 months or so. Maybe a bit longer on Freedom Arms or S&W Performance Center revolvers. Don't forget to send plenty of ammo for funtion testing after re-assembly. Two to three hundred rounds should suffice. More would be appreciated.:)

Can't STAND cleaning my guns. I am a perfectionist and I absolutely CAN NOT clean a gun in under an hour. Autos take two.
I came up with a great racket though: My boss will buy guns from me with the agreement that I can buy it back anytime for the same price. So I sell him one of my really dirty guns. He cleans it so he can shoot it, cleans it again, then takes it to his dad the gunsmith for a little tune-up. Then I buy it back. Takes about 3-4 months but I never fail to get back a better gun than I sold. And clean!
So I guess you could say it actually takes me about 3 MONTHS to clean a gun.
Does any one know where to get one of those vibrating sonic tanks the gunsmiths use to get guns clean??

Have to vote no on this one. I don't like cleaning guns either. So I tend to gravitate towards firearms that are low maintenance - like the Glock. I have a great AR15 but I want to get an AK just so I don't have to be anal about cleaning the thing after I shoot it.
The older I get, the lazier.

The only time it's a pain for me is when I go for one of those weekend type camping, shooting affairs, where almost evrything gets shot a lot. Then when you get home and you're looking at 3 or 4 long guns and 5 or 6 handguns, all very dirty...
that's tiresome!
But normally, no, usually will only go two matches or a practice session and a match at most between cleaning. Always run a bore snake through after any shooting though.
