I recently came across...and snatched up...a really nice 98%+ Mod 28 4". I have never seen a 5 screw 28. Serial number S 1101XX. Correct Diamond grips etc. Somebody help me out on its birthday?

Is it stamped Model 28 in the crane cutout?
I'm betting it's not.
You've got an EARLY Highway Patrolman.
I'm afraid to ask... How much did you give for it?

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, second edition, shows that serial numbers
S103000 - - S139999 were produced in 1954 -- 1955
Since the Highway Patrolman was only introduced in April 1954, you indeed have an early one!
Early production may be marked "Highway Patrol" or "PATROLMAN" on the barrel.
They didn't start stamping the model number, 28, until 1957.
Unusual to find a service grade piece like that in such nice condition. So very many Highway Patrolman revolvers were produced, it is hard to call one "A collector's item," unless it's something really special. Sounds like you found one of them.
Good on you.

Thanks alot ya'll. I knew it was nice..I knew it was old. I didn't realize it was quite that good a find. the best picture I can take in the middle of the night in my garage with a work light..(and my limited skill) No Model # in the crane cut out. Though it is properly serial numbered on the cylinder. Barrel is marked "Highway Patrolman" Very slight muzzle wear, light line around the cylinder. If you must know...$350...and I jumped on it...

I'm pretty certain that you have one of the first 750, possibly even one of the first 500, of these handguns made.
The S serial number started at 103000 and change, but the first Highway Patrolmen started at S107500. There were over a half-dozen models being produced concurrently that were also sharing the same serial number block, so it can be tough to tell.
The front sight is hard to make out.
Is it by chance a half-moon sitting on top of the ramp? Or is it more teardropped shaped?
Any chance of a clearer picture of the front sight?

Greeting's All-
Beautiful find there Sgt! The "Highway Patrolman"
or model 28 is one of my favorite Smith's of all-time! And
at $350, you stole it~
As they say in Monopoly go directly to jail; DO NOT
pass GO! And there is not a "get out of jail free" card! LOL
Enjoy~

I have an early M28, S215XXX, that is my favorite handgun. I might carry other things, but the M28 is the one I keep by my bedside.
Congratulations on picking up an awesome S&W.

Front sight picture. I appreciate all the positive comments. I may have to post a few others. I have managed to find a few nice ones laying around. As a matter of fact, when our Dept went from "carry what you can qualify with" to issue guns...I bought several from Officers. That was good timing on my part and quite a bit of luck. Quite a few of them have alot of history for me.
