Saw a program where some idiot kept one as a "pet" in his chest...once it started hurting he tried all the tricks to get it out to no avail, finaly had surgery to get it out.

Would imagine if I had a friend who showed me his "friend", he would no longer be my friend!

He would show it off in bars and at parties, apparently they pop their heads in and out of the hole. For those interested in this disgusting subject, to get rid of it I think they started off by putting lard or wax or something in the hole to suffocate it, when that did not work he slept with a raw steak over the hole so it would exit the guy by burrowing into the steak. They tried something else before they removed it surgically, but I think I was busy throwing up during that part. :barf: (Did not think I would ever use that emoticon!)

We get them on squirrels here all the time. Especially in the summer. It's pretty nasty looking because all the hair is gone around the area. Enough to make you not want to eat the thing.

I watched a documentary several years back about Eskimos going Caribou hunting in the summer. When the peeled back the skin it was full of botfly larvae. :barf:

I did the same thing Shooten. I've seen them on squirrels, but it was during an early squirrel season hunt that was abnormally warm. It was nasty and we tossed the carcass even though the rest of it would've been fine.

In reading about Bot flies, I learned about the Nasal Bot fly. Yes, they can even infect the sinuses of animals such as sheep and deer (more or less harmless to animals, but can be deadly in humans). For some reason, that one gives me the creeps more than the "normal" variant.

This particular passage made my skin crawl:

I have been to some amazingly leech infested places. I've seen them so thick on the ground, you can literally hear them crawling towards you.

My uncle said leeches in Vietnam were an every day thing. Whoever had a cigarette going at the time became the "surgeon."

Okay, so at least ticks aren't bot flies. Just when you thought "Alien" was science-fiction.

Speaking of leeches, one of my co-workers told me one day how he got a leech on his berries (as in twig and berries) during his service in Vietnam. He never lived it down once he showed it to the medical officer back at base.

There is also some sort of very small fish in the tropics that likes to swim up your urethra and dig in. Yuck!
