I just got one, traded a Norinco 213 for it. I am quite happy so far. I would love to hear the opinions of others on this gun.

I had a friend that had one and loved it. I know that Ala Dan has a nickeled one on his short list. I personally think they are one of the classiest looking pistols out there, but then again I'm over 50.:D Have fun and enjoy, Mike

I've got a 639, been a very nice gun for me, been totally reliable so far and a great size. Just big enough to feel comfortable to my large hands, but still very slim and compact. Think it's odd they never really took off

Leather being a bit hard to find is my only complaint. I did consider accuracy to be not very good until I tried some heavier than 115 grain loads and groups tightned up quite a bit.

I had owned a 39-2 nickel plated S & W that was the prettiest gun in the fold. It shot well and never had any problems with it. The alloy frame made it light weight for carrying, and the grip fit my hand perfectly. The only reason I sold it was to finance a purchase for a Sig P-228. The deal didn't materialize and ended up buying a S & W 645. I still wish that I had it.

I've had my 39-2 for about 20 years now. It is my HD gun and the action is smooth as silk. It'll run through any factory ammo I've put through it. The size and grip fit me well with my smallish hands. Shoots where I point it too. I also purchased a model 59 that was nickle shortly after I got the 39-2. Since it was a double stack magazine the grip was too big to feel comfortable so I sold it shortly afterwards.

I assume they lost their popularity due to the single stack configuration but I'll keep mine for the long haul and not complain one bit.

I have two, a blued version and a nickled one. Coincidentally they are very close in serial numbers. The nickle version appears to have been a factory "special", made for a S&W employee. Both are good shooters.

I once owned one. Carry load was Federal 115 gr. JHP, because it was 100% reliable in my 39-2. Even though there is some slightly better defense ammunition available today, my Ruger is stoked with the above Federal.

I once had a 39-2, bought it used before I knew what to look out for in a used gun. I think this one was very heavily used and the frame looked it. It was reasonably accurate at first, but accuracy got worse the more it was shot, so I sold it off. I now have a 439 that was bought used, but appears to have been used very little. It is reliable and accurate. The 39/439/639 are great lookers and feel very good in my hands. Enjoy your 39-2 and give us a range report.

Greeting's All-

MikeJ you are so right, my friend!:D And as others
have said, the Smith & Wesson 39-2 is one of the finest
pistols to come down the pike. In NIB condition, with the
factory nickel finish; I don't think there is a firearm any
more elegant~ and yes, it is on my short list!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

IIRC, the 39-2 incorporated some changes that were requested/suggested by the Illinois State Police. They were one of the first large Law Enforcement agencies to transition to a semi auto. I believe they changed the extractor and improved the reliability with hollow points.

they are very sleek guns, although I always wondered why S&W went through the trouble to design a rear sight that was only semi adjustable. MMC once made a unit that provided windage and elevation adjustments.

I have a S&W model 39 that I bought new in 1968, making it 35 years old. It has worked very reliably and I still shoot it occasionally. I put new grip panels on it from Kelly Grips in Texas, and it looks very good.

I had a 39-2 years ago. Too big in the grip for my hand. A fine reliable pistol that fired everything I could get into the magazine. Most accurate round was S&W (yes they sold Fiocci ammo once upon a time) 9mm Wadcutter. I sold it to a guy named Reed a long time ago.

Oops! Almost forgot

Be careful on reassembly. The slide has a tendency to stick, then release suddenly. This could damage the ejector if you don't have it held down properly!

I have several pistols. This one is my favorite. It shoots easily to point of aim and has never given me any fits. I bought it over three years ago from the original owner who kept the box, the never opened cleaning kit, all paperwork, and two factory stainless magazines. I carry it occasionally, the finish is still nearly 100%.

I've had a 639 for a few years now. I had wanted one for years and when I finally found a nice one at the local shop, I jumped on it. It's been super reliable and hasn't had one malfunction in over 600 rounds. It fits my hand very well and is very comfortable to shoot.
